📋 Summary

The Tailor’s Secret: A Porthos Predicament and Aramis’s Intrigue

The Dilemma of the Unwearable Wardrobe

In this chapter, D'Artagnan pays an unexpected visit to his dear friend Porthos, only to find the musketeer in a state of deep melancholy. Porthos is surrounded by a "mess of fringes, braids, fancy embroideries, and clashing colors," yet he claims he has "nothing to wear" for the highly anticipated celebration hosted by Mr. Fouquet at Vaux.

The source of Porthos's frustration is as humorous as it is impractical. Having grown tired of the "too personal" process of being measured by tailors, Porthos had long relied on his assistant, Mousqueton, as a proxy. Porthos explains, "I noticed that Mousqueton was my size, so I sent him to be measured for suits in my place." However, due to Mousqueton’s "easy life," the assistant gained weight, rendering all of Porthos's "fifty new and quite fashionable suits" completely unwearable for the musketeer. With the party only two days away and no tailor available, Porthos feels his situation is hopeless.

Seeking the King’s Tailor

Recognizing the urgency, D'Artagnan suggests they visit Mr. Percerin, the "king’s own tailor." Upon their arrival at the grand mansion, they encounter a massive crowd of people, but D'Artagnan uses his status to gain immediate access, declaring he is there "on the king’s business."

Initially, Percerin is reluctant to take on a new client due to the immense pressure of crafting "five suits" for the king. It is only when Aramis arrives that the situation changes. Aramis, wielding significant influence, convinces the tailor to accommodate Porthos, promising that by doing so, he will also "please Mr. Fouquet." The tailor immediately complies, signaling to Porthos to "get your measurements taken."

Aramis’s Deceptive Maneuvers

While Porthos is occupied, a more complex scheme unfolds between Aramis and the tailor. Aramis, deeply involved in a secret plot to "free the king’s twin brother," seeks to manipulate Percerin to serve his own ends. He claims that he and Mr. Fouquet wish to commission a portrait of the king wearing one of the new, unseen suits.

Aramis employs a mix of flattery and subtle coercion, telling the tailor, "Mr. Fouquet did say that if he could not have the portrait done as he wants, he would be forced to tell the king how you spoiled his gift." Faced with this threat, the intimidated tailor reveals his designs and fabrics. The chapter concludes with a moment of calculated treachery: "When no one was watching, Aramis slipped a sample of the fabric into his pocket." This final act underscores the shadows lurking beneath the surface of the grand preparations for Vaux, as Aramis uses the vanity of the court to further his clandestine agenda.
