Why are some kinds of fruits not considered vegan?
Thanks for asking. Have you ever had that moment when you're relishing a juicy fig and someone drops the bomb that you might actually be chowing down on a wasp.
Yeah, surprising as it sounds, it's true.
Fig wasps do their thing by pollinating figs from the inside but unfortunately they sometimes get stuck in there.
Now bear in mind, these wasps are tiny.
Around 1 to 2mm long.
So you won't notice them when you take a bite.
But what are the implications in that scenario if you're a vegan?
In fact, there are many cases when a type of fruit isn't quite as vegan as you might think.
What's the strict definition of vegan food?
There are some steadfast rules for those rocking the vegan lifestyle.
No animal flesh, no byproducts from livestock like milk, eggs, cheese or honey.
And definitely no additives like E120, a colourant made from insects.
That's the universal baseline.
Beyond that, depending on personal beliefs some might steer clear of non -organic or environmentally questionable items. In such cases it's not about the fruit itself containing animal products but the way it's cultivated which can be linked to some sketchy human and environmental practices.
Mexican avocados are one example.
Then there's the debate about coconuts from Thailand.
Some folks avoid them because the harvest often involves exploited monkeys.
Beyond the moral qualms some fruit straight up doesn't meet the vegan criteria we talked about earlier.
Bananas are a go -to fruit for many, but some get a special spray to delay ripening and the solution includes chittazan, a component which comes from the exoskeleton of crustaceans.
Oranges, lemons, apples and pears might be coated with beeswax or shellac, a resin from an Asian cochineal that also finds its way into candy coatings.
How would I know if this is the case when I'm buying fruit?
In August 2022, Tesco came under fire for selling non -vegan fruit, like citrus fruit which was coated with wax to stay fresh for longer.
The food giant announced it would start labeling non -vegan fruit so that customers could make informed choices.
If you're concerned about unintentionally consuming non -vegan fruit, You might want to opt for organic fruit, which is always free from such treatments.
Meanwhile if you're hitting up a local market just pop the question to the person you're buying from.
There you have it. Now you know why some kinds of fruit are not considered vegan.
