Why is it so important that the ozone layer heals?
Thanks for asking. When it comes to news about the environment it can feel like everything is doom and gloom.
But we recently discussed how some people's climate anxiety has turned into climate optimism of late.
And that's a trend that could continue well into this year.
One piece of good news relates to depletion of the ozone layer.
You may well have heard of the so -called hole in the ozone layer.
Well, the name is a little misleading.
It refers to the ozone layer thinning in areas rather than an actual hole.
The phenomenon was first discovered in 1985 by Joseph Farman, Brian Gardner and Jonathan Shanklin, all scientists at the British Antarctic Survey.
The Scientific Assessment Of Ozone Depletion Report is published every four years to inform people about the state of the ozone layer.
It's sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Program.
The latest edition was released in early January 2023 and says that the ozone layer is healing.
What's more, it's the result of cooperation between countries all over the world.
What's the purpose of the ozone layer?
You could call it a protective shield over planet Earth and it's hard to overstate its importance.
The ozone layer is located in the stratosphere, over 30 miles above ground level.
It first appeared around 600 million years ago, generated from the oxygen, ocean algae were emitting through photosynthesis.
It protects us humans and other life forms by absorbing ultraviolet radiation from the sun, thereby stopping it from reaching Earth surface and harming us.
Prior to the ozone layer developing, life only existed in oceans which were deep enough to protect organisms from UV radiation.
How quickly will it be healed then?
It's expected that the ozone layer will return to pre -1980 levels by the time we get to 2040, but the polar regions may have to wait a little longer.
Over the Arctic, we're looking at a full recovery by 2045, while over the Antarctic it should be around the middle of the 2060s.
The improvement comes as a result of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty that was signed in 1987 and came into effect two years later.
It helped massively reduce the use of ozone depleting compounds called chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs for short.
They were mostly used as solvents and refrigerants.
On top of damaging the ozone, CFCs are also exceptionally potent greenhouse gases.
According to National Geographic, a single molecule of CFC 12 can hold nearly 11 ,000 times the heat of carbon dioxide.
The key will be not getting complacent now the healing process has come so far, and of course extending that success to other areas of environmental protection.
There you have it...
