I am your host, Stassi Schroeder.
Welcome to Tell Me Lies, the official podcast.
What's the most unhinged thing of season three?
Steven, because he's so evil.
Tell Me Lies, the official podcast, now streaming and stream the new season of Tell Me Lies on Hulu and Hulu on Disney.
Good morning, crust.
It's a great day to be a bread brother.
Mornings are not my jam or jelly.
Oh, come on.
Stop loafing around.
I just woke up feeling hollow inside.
Just grab one of the new morning on crustable sandwiches like bright eyed berry, or up an apple filled with 12 grams of protein and tons of deliciousness.
Crust, what are you eating?
It's just granola, not even yogurt.
No crust, no fuss.
Uncrust your mornings.
Why is Elvis known as the king?
Thanks for asking.
Baz Luhrmann's Elvis Presley biopic hit UK cinemas on the 24th of June 2022, starring Austin Butler as the king of rock and roll himself and Tom Hanks as his controversial manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Let's look back at how Elvis became a global superstar from the 1950s through to the late 70s.
He earned his reputation as the king for a seemingly endless list of hits.
Many successful artists have cited him as being their number one influence.
And to this day, he's still a popular culture icon, even 45 years after passing away.
What stuck out the most about Elvis' music?
He might not have invented rock and roll, but Elvis Presley is indisputably a figurehead when it comes to the genre.
His music paved the way for a number of other styles.
His success is unquestioned when you consider that he recorded 18 number one hits.
He led a real musical revolution and his rhythms were just as inimitable as his personality.
His performances wowed the public and his powerful singing was filled with emotion.
According to many contemporary journalists,
It was Robert Johnson, writing for the Memphis Press Scimitar in 1956, who first bestowed the title of King upon him, referring to Presley as the fledgling king of rock and roll.
Why is Elvis still remembered to this day?
On top of being an accomplished singer, Elvis was also a cinema star, where he recorded at a prolific rate.
He's one of the first entertainers to be so successful in two very different fields.
Further proof of his enduring influence can be found in how successful some of the cover songs he produced were.
A number were actually better known than the originals.
Take Johnny B. Goode, for example, which was actually written by Chuck Berry.
Or Tutti Frutti, which Little Richard wrote back in 1954.
But beyond his success, the singer's personality and work methods were subject to controversy.
His artistic overproduction pushed him to produce more and more, which didn't always convince his fans.
Manager, Tom Parker, was seen as exploiting the star for his own gain, something that comes across in the new film.
Elvis himself even admitted to sometimes singing songs which he didn't personally like.
How did the King's decline affect his reputation?
He became addicted to alcohol and prescription medication, overdosing on sleeping pills twice in 1973 and being hospitalized.
The King wasn't done, though.
He would return to make further concert appearances each time, but they were unpredictable.
Sometimes he looked frail and other times fighting fit, putting on top quality shows.
He was always on the road and would end up pushing himself too far.
It all culminated on the 16th of August 1977 when partner Ginger Alden found him laid out on the floor dead from a heart attack.
Over 80,000 people attended his funeral.
Like many prominent figures, there have been a number of theories around the circumstances of his death.
Some fans have called into question the cause of death, while others even speculate that he's still alive.
Elvis' death actually elevated him to legendary status, making him more famous and revered than ever before.
His esteem grew over the years in the US and everywhere else.
For example, Always On My Mind flopped upon release in 1973 but suddenly became a favorite among music fans in the 1980s.
