Trump, Musk, Bezos, are they really self -made men?
Thanks for asking. We all know the classic tale, a man from humble beginnings works tirelessly, overcomes adversity and rises to the top.
It's the famous myth of the self -made man.
But where did it come from?
The idea was first popularized by Frederick Douglass, the African -American abolitionist writer and orator.
Born into slavery in 1818, Douglas escaped at the age of 20 and went on to become one of the most influential voices of his time.
In the 1860s, he championed the self -made man concept, drawing inspiration from Benjamin Franklin's autobiography.
Today, this narrative is everywhere.
Many of the world's top executives cultivate the image that they built their empire from the ground up.
Even the 47th President of the United States leans into this myth.
In a 2015 NBC interview he said, But a 2018 New York Times investigation revealed Trump actually received over $400m from his parents.
Much of it through tax loopholes.
In fact Donald Trump, who has always presented his fortune as the result of hard work, was already a millionaire by the age of 8.
What about Elon Musk?
Musk brands himself as a self -made genius.
But reports, including JVTech, reveal his father, Errol Musk, co -owned an emerald mine in Zambia, giving Elon a financial head start.
Musk also claims to have founded PayPal and Tesla.
But he didn't. He initially launched an online bank, X .com, which merged with Confinity, the company behind PayPal's core technology.
Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Ibrad and Mark Tarpening.
Musk only became involved in 2004 as an investor and later took over as CEO in 2008.
Do many top CEOs maintain this myth?
Absolutely. It's a common theme in corporate success stories.
Take Jeff Bezos. He started Amazon in 1995 as an online bookstore.
But with a significant head start, his parents invested over $245 ,000 to help get the business off the ground.
So how many billionaires are truly self -made?

A 2025 Oxfam report states 60 % of billionaires' fortunes come from inheritance, monopolies, or collusion.
