Hey there, Smarty Pants.
Trusty narrator here.
Guess where I just got back from?
A vacation! I visited Italy, Spain, Greece, and France.
Do you know what all those countries have in common, Smarty Pants?
If you said they're all located in Europe, you're right.
But they share something else.
A body of water. If you said they're all on the Mediterranean Sea, you're extra right.
And since I wanted to visit so many countries along the Mediterranean Sea, I decided flying an airplane was out.
And I decided to use a different mode of transportation.
Any guesses what it is?
Here, I'll give you a hint.
That's right, Smarty Pants.
I took a cruise ship.
Just me and 3 ,000 strangers aboard a 1 ,000 -foot long floating city for a week -long excursion.
And for reference, 1 ,000 feet is about the size of the Eiffel Tower.
And while it was a great experience seeing all those different countries, I'd be lying if I said my favorite part wasn't all the fun that I had aboard the ship.
And if there's one thing a trusty narrator doesn't do, it's lie.
The truth is, there were so many cool things to do on the cruise that I barely slept.
Well, that and the fact that I was up most of the nights with seasickness.
But I didn't let a little queasiness stop me from having a great time out at sea.
Nope, I played video games at the on -board arcade.
Saw a stage play at a state -of -the -art theater.
And even went down a massive water slide into an Olympic -sized swimming pool.
Come to think of it, I went down that massive water slide a lot.
You could say I was living my best life out at sea.
But do you want to know what kept me up most nights during the cruise, Smarty Pants?
Well, aside from the seasickness.
It was the fact that me and all those people did all those activities on a massive boat floating on water.
Which got me thinking.
How do boats work? How can something so heavy stay afloat?
When were boats invented?
And what's the biggest boat ever made?
It's time for a whiff of science and a splash of history.
On... Who's smarted?
Who's smarted? Who's smart?
Is it you? Is it me?
Is it science or history?
Listen up, everyone.
Everyone, we make smarting lots of fun on Who Smarted.

I'm not going to lie, smarty pants.
I had such a good time on my cruise, I decided to book another one.
I found this one online.
Really, really cheap.
Ooh, there's the captain now.
Maybe they can answer my questions about boats.
Excuse me, sir. Are you the captain?
Aye, the name's Booty, and I be the captain of this here ship.
Who you be? I'm the trusty narrator, and I brought along some smarty pants.
Their pants be smart, eh?
The smartest? We were hoping you could answer a few questions about boats, seeing as you're the captain of this cruise ship.
Cruise ship? Ha! Pirate Booty don't captain no cruises.
Did you say, p -p -p -p -pirate?
That's right. Me and my crew are here for one thing and one thing only.
Finding buried treasure and eating cheesy puff snacks.
Nom nom nom nom nom.
Uh oh, Smarty Pants.
No wonder this cruise was so cheap.
You always got to be careful ordering things off the internet.
Enough of your yapping.
As I see it, you got two choices.
Either you join my ragtag crew, or you can walk the plank and take your chances in the sea.
Or you could just hang out below deck.
So, three choices. But I warn you, hanging out below deck ain't no picnic.
The seas can get pretty rough on a pirate ship.
I seem to be in a bit of a pickle with a pirate.
I'm not going to lie, I really don't see myself as pirate material, so joining the crew is out.
And hanging out below deck is not gonna be great for my queasy tummy.
Ha ha! Then walking the plank it be!
Oh boy. Any ideas how I can get out of this, smarty pants?
Just call him out. There's really no wrong answer at this point.
Uh -huh. Uh -huh. Hmm.
Huh. Okay. Huh. Ah.
Certainly worth a shot.
Ahem. Ahem. Excuse me, pirate booty.
Aye. I have a proposition for you.
I be all buccaneers.
Get it? I'm all ears.
But I'm a pirate, so it's buccaneers.
Anyone not laughing at my joke walks the plank.
That's funny now, isn't it?
Anyway, you were saying?
How about this? I'll ask you three questions about boats.
If you answer all of them correctly, I'll lead you to the greatest treasure of all time.
Go on. But if you get any of the questions wrong, then you'll let me go.
Deal! Let me go on land, not off the plank.
Oh. Um. Okay. Still a deal.
Shake on it. Um. Do you mind if I shake your non -hook hand?
Or whatever. All right, pirate booty.
First question. In two parts.
How do boats work? And how can something so heavy stay afloat?
Ah, that be an easy one If an object weighs less than the amount of water it displaces, then it floats Otherwise, it sinks A boat floats because it displaces or relocates an amount of water that weighs more than the boat does And the larger the boat, the more water it displaces, allowing it to stay
afloat A rock, on the other hand, this places less water than it weighs, causing it to sink.
So, what do you think, Smarty Pants?
Was Pirate Booty right or wrong?
He was right. When an object is placed in water, there are two primary forces acting on it.
The force of gravity pulling it downward.
And a buoyancy force pushing it upwards.
The gravitational force is determined by the object's weight.
And the buoyancy force is determined by the weight of the water displaced by the object in the water.
If the gravitational force is less than the buoyancy force, then the object floats.
Yeah, that's what I said, without all them fancy science words.
Sorry. Well done, Pirate Booty.
I'm so happy I could do a peg.
A peg? It'd be like a jig for people with a wooden leg.
Ah, I see. Okay, question number two.
When were boats invented?
Hmm, that's an awfully tough question.
But the answer B, about 10 to 11 ,000 years ago.
Hmm, what do you think, Smarty Pants?
is Pirate Booty, right?
Yep, Pirate Booty nailed it again.
The earliest boat ever found is housed in a museum in Aasen, Netherlands.
It is called a Pesecanoe.
The Pesecanoe is believed to be the world's oldest known boat.
And it's certainly the oldest canoe.
Carbon dating indicates the boat was constructed during the early Mesolithic period between 8 ,040 BCE and 7 ,510 BCE, or roughly 10 ,000 to 11 ,000 years ago.
Arr, I'm no mathematician, but I believe that'd be two correct answers.
That's one more correct answer than I'd be having legs, hands, or eyes.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
I have to admit, smarty pants, I'm getting a little nervous about our plan.
But just like you trust me, I trust you.
Okay, third and final question, Pirate Booty.
If you get this right, I will lead you to the greatest treasure you'll ever find.
But if you get this question wrong, you have to let me go.
And not by way of walking the plank.
Fine, matey. Give me the question and let's get that treasure.
All right. The third and final question is right after this quick break.
Hi, guys. It's Trusty.

Hey everyone, Trusty here.
One of the things I love about hosting Who's Smarted is getting to answer all those amazing questions from curious smarty pants.
And that's why I'm excited to tell you about another show that does exactly that.
Our friend's podcast, But Why?
A podcast for curious kids.
Have you ever asked something like, why does the wind blow?
Or, do skyscrapers actually scrape the sky?
And you weren't quite sure of the answer?
Well, but why has you covered?
They've answered questions from over 16 ,000 kids across 90 countries, and they're not afraid to tackle any topic, even the gross ones that make grown -ups squirm.
I mean, they have whole episodes about poop and making paint from spit and rocks.
How cool is that? Their team gets real experts to answer real questions from real kids like you.
So if your family loves learning interesting stuff on Who's Smarted, you'll definitely want to check out But Why.
You can find But Why wherever you get your podcasts.
Now back to Who's Smarted.
All right, smarty pants, I'm feeling a little nervous.
This whole quiz with Pirate Booty seemed like a good idea at the time, but so far he's explained how a boat floats and identified not only when the first boat was built, but potentially the actual oldest known boat.
If he gets this last question right, I have to lead him to the world's greatest treasure, which between you and me, I don't have.
Let's go, narrator.
Quit your stalling.
Coming. Smarty pants, what should I do?
Did someone just say remain calm?
Wow, I don't know how you can be so relaxed at a time like this, smarty pants.
But I admire your grace under pressure.
All right, let's get this over with.
Pirate booty? Yeah?
You ready with that question and the treasure you've been hinting at?
Yep, here we go. Question three.
What is the largest boat ever built?
Hmm, let's see. Um, are...
I, uh, give me a minute.
I, uh, I don't know.
Wait, you don't know?
Ye, I seem to be stumped.
And I'm not talking about me leg.
The answer is... pioneering spirit.
Ah, of course, pioneering spirit.
It was on the tip of me tongue.
So close I could taste it.
Actually, what exactly is pioneering spirit?
Pioneering Spirit is the name of a catamaran crane vessel located in Switzerland.
It is designed for the single -lift installation and removal of large oil and gas platforms, as well as the installation of record -weight pipelines.
Pioneering Spirit is 1 ,253 feet long, which is like four statues of liberties, including the base, stacked on top of each other.
Whoa. It's also 407 feet wide, which is the size of a professional baseball field.
And even though it weighs 403 ,342 gross tons, it displaces 1 million tons, which is why it's able to float.
Ha ha! Let's not forget how I got that one right.
The pioneering spirit was built in South Korea in 2013 And is estimated to have cost close to 3 billion dollars That's a lot of booty Sure is, PB Anywho, I guess me and the smarty pants are free to go Since you didn't get all the questions correct Correct?
Yep, a deal's a deal I'll drop you off at the next port But I sure do wish I could have gotten my hand and hook on that treasure you was squawking about.
Well, the funny thing about that treasure is I didn't really have any treasure to lead you to.
No treasure? I'd be lying if I said yes.
And as a trusty narrator, I never lie.
I see. So it was a bluff.
Yes, that's a perfect word for it.
Uh -huh. Well, in that case, the deal's off.
Looks like you'll be walking that plank after all.
Ha ha ha. Uh -oh. Oh, me and my big, honest mouth.
Unless you can produce a great treasure, you'll be swimming with the fishies.
Literally. Yikes. Smarty Pants, what should I do?
What's that? Tell him what?
Oh, great idea. Pirate Booty?
Aye. The Smarty Pants believe I have already given you, and them, the greatest treasure there is.
Oh, yeah? What be that?
The treasure of knowledge.
You know, learning stuff like the smarty pants do when they listen to Who Smarted.
Think about it. We all learned something about boats today that we didn't know before.
Even you learned something new, Pirate Booty.
Isn't that enough? Well, I can't argue with you, narrator.
You're right. Let's celebrate our new knowledge.
Pirate Booties for all!
That was a close one.
Good job, Smarty Pants.
And remember, always, always, always be careful about what you see online.
