And since I wanted to visit so many countries along the Mediterranean Sea, I decided flying an airplane was out.
And I decided to use a different mode of transportation.
Any guesses what it is?
Here, I'll give you a hint.
That's right, Smarty Pants.
I took a cruise ship.
Just me and 3 ,000 strangers aboard a 1 ,000 -foot long floating city for a week -long excursion.
And for reference, 1 ,000 feet is about the size of the Eiffel Tower.
And while it was a great experience seeing all those different countries, I'd be lying if I said my favorite part wasn't all the fun that I had aboard the ship.
And if there's one thing a trusty narrator doesn't do, it's lie.
The truth is, there were so many cool things to do on the cruise that I barely slept.
Well, that and the fact that I was up most of the nights with seasickness.
But I didn't let a little queasiness stop me from having a great time out at sea.
Nope, I played video games at the on -board arcade.
Saw a stage play at a state -of -the -art theater.
And even went down a massive water slide into an Olympic -sized swimming pool.
Come to think of it, I went down that massive water slide a lot.
You could say I was living my best life out at sea.
But do you want to know what kept me up most nights during the cruise, Smarty Pants?
Well, aside from the seasickness.
It was the fact that me and all those people did all those activities on a massive boat floating on water.
Which got me thinking.

Who you be? I'm the trusty narrator, and I brought along some smarty pants.
Their pants be smart, eh?
The smartest? We were hoping you could answer a few questions about boats, seeing as you're the captain of this cruise ship.
Cruise ship? Ha! Pirate Booty don't captain no cruises.
Did you say, p -p -p -p -pirate?
That's right. Me and my crew are here for one thing and one thing only.
Finding buried treasure and eating cheesy puff snacks.
Nom nom nom nom nom.
Uh oh, Smarty Pants.
No wonder this cruise was so cheap.
You always got to be careful ordering things off the internet.
Enough of your yapping.
As I see it, you got two choices.
Either you join my ragtag crew, or you can walk the plank and take your chances in the sea.
Or you could just hang out below deck.
So, three choices. But I warn you, hanging out below deck ain't no picnic.
The seas can get pretty rough on a pirate ship.
I seem to be in a bit of a pickle with a pirate.
I'm not going to lie, I really don't see myself as pirate material, so joining the crew is out.
And hanging out below deck is not gonna be great for my queasy tummy.
Ha ha! Then walking the plank it be!
Oh boy. Any ideas how I can get out of this, smarty pants?
Just call him out. There's really no wrong answer at this point.
Uh -huh. Uh -huh. Hmm.
Huh. Okay. Huh. Ah.
Certainly worth a shot.

Aye. I have a proposition for you.
I be all buccaneers.
Get it? I'm all ears.

How about this? I'll ask you three questions about boats.
If you answer all of them correctly, I'll lead you to the greatest treasure of all time.

First question. In two parts.
How do boats work? And how can something so heavy stay afloat?
Ah, that be an easy one If an object weighs less than the amount of water it displaces, then it floats Otherwise, it sinks A boat floats because it displaces or relocates an amount of water that weighs more than the boat does And the larger the boat, the more water it displaces, allowing it to stay
afloat A rock, on the other hand, this places less water than it weighs, causing it to sink.
So, what do you think, Smarty Pants?
Was Pirate Booty right or wrong?
He was right. When an object is placed in water, there are two primary forces acting on it.
The force of gravity pulling it downward.
And a buoyancy force pushing it upwards.
The gravitational force is determined by the object's weight.
And the buoyancy force is determined by the weight of the water displaced by the object in the water.
If the gravitational force is less than the buoyancy force, then the object floats.
Yeah, that's what I said, without all them fancy science words.
Sorry. Well done, Pirate Booty.
I'm so happy I could do a peg.

When were boats invented?
Hmm, that's an awfully tough question.
But the answer B, about 10 to 11 ,000 years ago.

Yep, Pirate Booty nailed it again.
The earliest boat ever found is housed in a museum in Aasen, Netherlands.
It is called a Pesecanoe.
The Pesecanoe is believed to be the world's oldest known boat.
And it's certainly the oldest canoe.
Carbon dating indicates the boat was constructed during the early Mesolithic period between 8 ,040 BCE and 7 ,510 BCE, or roughly 10 ,000 to 11 ,000 years ago.
Arr, I'm no mathematician, but I believe that'd be two correct answers.
That's one more correct answer than I'd be having legs, hands, or eyes.

The answer is... pioneering spirit.
Ah, of course, pioneering spirit.
It was on the tip of me tongue.

Actually, what exactly is pioneering spirit?
Pioneering Spirit is the name of a catamaran crane vessel located in Switzerland.
It is designed for the single -lift installation and removal of large oil and gas platforms, as well as the installation of record -weight pipelines.
Pioneering Spirit is 1 ,253 feet long, which is like four statues of liberties, including the base, stacked on top of each other.
Whoa. It's also 407 feet wide, which is the size of a professional baseball field.
And even though it weighs 403 ,342 gross tons, it displaces 1 million tons, which is why it's able to float.
Ha ha! Let's not forget how I got that one right.
The pioneering spirit was built in South Korea in 2013 And is estimated to have cost close to 3 billion dollars That's a lot of booty Sure is, PB Anywho, I guess me and the smarty pants are free to go Since you didn't get all the questions correct Correct?
