Squiz Kids!
It's your daily news fix.
Fun, free, fresh.
So, it's the school holidays.
Which means no homework, no uniforms, no sitting in classrooms for a couple of weeks.
But what's the best way to spend all that free time, Christy?
Welcome to the Squiz Kids Holiday Movie Guide, the Spring Edition.
Your quick as a flash run through of all the kids' movie sitting cinemas these holidays to keep boredom at bay.
I'm Christy Kijerina.
And I'm Bryce Corbett.
And yes, that's right, Christy.
Over the next 10 minutes, we're going to walk you through the new films springing up on the big screen these holidays.
See what you did there.
See what I did there.
Yeah, thank you.
And whether or not they're worth a trip to the cinema.
Shall we get started?
Let's do it.
First up, one of the most popular animated films of the past few years is back with a brand new caper.
It's The Bad Guys 2.
Yes.
Based on the best-selling graphic novel by Aussie author Aaron Blaby.
This gang of animal crooks turned heroes are trying to settle into life as good guys.
Mmm.
But just when things calm down, they're pulled out of retirement for one last big job.
And if that's not tough enough, they're up against an all-female squad of criminals who are just as clever and sneaky.
It's packed with action and comedy.
I love that one.
It's great for the six-plus crowd who can handle fast-moving fun and a little bit of cartoon mischief.
Let's have a quick listen.
Things sure have changed.
Not everyone believes it, but the bad guys win good.
I'm keeping my eye on you, baby.
What was that?
I panicked, okay?
I'm a panicker.
It hasn't been easy with a reputation like ours.
Now you want to work at a bank.
Why not?
Some of my best memories are at banks.
You robbed us three times.
That was this bank?
The name's Katie.
We're students of your work, big crime nerds.
So you're like the bad girls.
And you're like a mango with teeth.
What?
Is that what I look like?
Ooh, she is spicy.
I like it.
Insult me next.
You need a job, and I need some extra hands.
Professionals.
Maybe you don't keep up with the news, but we're good now.
I'm not exactly asking.
So are we bad again?
We just got to do this one last job.
All right, Mr. Master of Disguise, do your thing.
I promise to play you respectfully.
Where's my flowers?
There you go.
Cappuccino.
That's one sequel I'll be lining up to see.
Now for something a little different a spooky, silly adventure that takes you right inside a zoo at midnight.
Cool.
It's called Night of the Zoopocalypse.
A meteor crashes into a zoo, turning the animals into, get this, zombies.
Yep, zombie zoo animals.
Oh, but don't worry, this isn't nightmare fuel.
It's a comedy horror toned down for kids.
A wolf and a mountain lion team up with other survivors to save the zoo, stop the mutant leader and prove that teamwork can beat even the weirdest virus.
I do love a mutant leader.
Now, parents, think of this as a gentle first step into scary movies.
It's just spooky enough to thrill, but it's still packed with laughs.
Probably best for ages seven and up, especially kids who love a little bit of Halloween fun.
Ah, a convenient plot device, eh?
What's going on out there?
Monsters have a word on this.
What?
We're in a... What is it?
A monster movie.
Oh, yeah, because that makes much more sense.
We've got to get out of here.
This feels like... Back to two.
What does that mean?
It means it will get even stranger.
You were right.
Definitely stranger.
That was silly, spooky and sweet all rolled into one.
Well, Bryce, we're halfway through our movie guide already.
Yep, we've buzzed through the first couple of films.
Let's hop into the second half.
Next up is one for the younger Squeeze Kids out there, especially if you love cats, colour and a touch of magic.
Do you know what I'm talking about, Christy?
I think I might.
It's Gabby's Dollhouse, the movie.
Yep.
Gabby and her grandma Gigi set off on a road trip to Cat Francisco.
Mm-hmm.
But when a quirky, slash evil cat lady swipes Gabby's beloved dollhouse, she and the Gabby cats have to work together to get it back.
They sure do.
And just in case you've never had the pleasure, Gabby's Dollhouse is a Netflix show where real-life Gabby shrinks down into her dollhouse, which transforms into an animated world full of quirky cat friends, each with their own special talents.
Yeah, it's pretty great.
And if you love colour, musical shows like Bluey or Trolls, then this one's a winner.
It's perfect for preschoolers and early primary, say ages three to seven, but older siblings might still get a kick out of the songs and the silliness.
We're taking a trip to spend the week with my grandma.
Buckle up, Gabby Katz, it's time to go.
Here we go.
Do you want to come to Cat Francisco with us?
Let's do it.
We're here.
The dollhouse.
I think we're moving.
Everyone, lean left.
The other left, baby box.
I'm learning so much today.
Marlena, mommy will be right back.
Who is that?
What do we have here?
Vera wondered aloud as the man in the street yelled at her.
Seriously, lady, what is wrong with you?
This dollhouse will complete my cat collection.
Add to cart.
It's time to get tiny.
Let's get the dollhouse back.
Oh, this is awesome.
That's a playful pick for a spring afternoon at the cinema.
And finally, a homegrown Aussie film set in the heart of the outback.
Yep, it's called Kangaroo.
An out-of-work ex-TV personality becomes stranded in a small town outside of Alice Springs.
There, he meets Charlie, a 12-year-old Indigenous girl.
Together, they form a surprising friendship as they rescue and raise orphaned joeys.
Oh, and even better, it's inspired by the real work of the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs.
Yes, it is.
So you can expect some stunning landscapes, adorable animals and a story that's both funny and heartwarming.
And yes, it's not often that you hear the phrase poo milkshake in a movie.
But don't let that put you off.
This one is packed with laughs, heart and an important message about community and caring for animals.
It's a perfect family choice for ages eight and up and really anyone who loved movies like Storm Boy or Red Dog.
Charlie, not again.
Mum, please.
And I told you no more ruse.
Someone else can save them.
Only three this time.
I miss you, Dad.
I miss him too, Charlie.
We'll get through this.
I've been doing the weather for six years.
I'm sick of it.
Chris, take some time out.
It might actually make you happy.
Oh, no.
Thought you might need some help with your car.
Who are you?
I'm Charlie.
She looks pretty hungry.
Come on, jump in.
I hate this town.
My dad taught me how to look afterwards.
When it's time, we'll bring them back to country where they belong.
Please tell me that's Vegemite.
Pure milkshake.
This one feels like it might just hop right into your favourite holiday pick.
Oh dear, there goes the dad joke alarm.
Well, that was inevitable.
Well, Bryce, that's our spring holiday movie guide all wrapped up.
Packed tighter than a joey in its mum's pouch.
Thanks for hanging out with us.
And don't forget, even though the Squeeze Kids Daily News podcast is on a little school holiday break, there's still heaps of fun content to keep your brains buzzing.
That's right, Christy.
We have Squeeze Kids Brain Teasers.
A riddle in the morning with the answer in the afternoon.
Every Friday, of course, we'll also have the bumper holiday quiz 10 questions for kids and 10 questions for adults on some fun topics.
And tune in tomorrow and Wednesday for a couple of episodes of a brand new series called Squiz Kids Spotlight, where we throw the spotlight onto someone cool and sit down and have a chat with them.
This week's episodes will see me sit down and chat to the wonderful Annabelle Crabb about her new book There's a Prawn in Parliament House.
And then you Christy, had the great privilege of having a chat with Australia's first astronaut, the amazing Catherine Benell-Pegg.
Yeah, I sure did.
And she was brilliant.
I can't wait for everyone to hear that chat.
And to make sure you don't miss out, subscribe to Squiz Kids on YouTube and make sure you're following us in your favourite podcast app so you don't miss a thing.
And as we always say, now get out there and have a most excellent day.
Over and out.
