📋 Summary

Treasure Mountain: A Moral Tale of Kindness and Greed

The Encounter on the Mountain

In a humble valley, a farmer named Willow and her father face hardship when their crops fail. Their situation changes when an elderly woman arrives at their hut, frail and hungry. Demonstrating pure generosity, Willow shares their meager meal with the stranger. In return, the woman reveals the location of a magical cave atop a mountain. She provides Willow with two keys: a gold key to unlock the stone door and a silver key to ensure her safe return. The old woman explicitly warns, "Take care not to lose this silver key," emphasizing that without it, one would be "stuck inside the cave for the rest of your days."

The Practical Choice vs. The Emperor's Greed

Upon entering the cave, Willow discovers piles of sparkling "golds, silver and diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies." However, she ignores these riches, choosing instead a "hand mill" she deems practical for grinding wheat. When she and her father use it, the mill produces an "abundance of soft, smooth flour," which they share with neighbors.

News of this miracle reaches the greedy Emperor and Empress. Driven by selfishness, they seize the mill, but their malice transforms the gift; instead of flour, the mill produces "chocolate" that fills the air and causes chaos, leading the rulers to discard it.

The Second Trial and Final Consequences

Willow returns to the mountain and retrieves a steel shovel, hoping to improve their farming. Again, the tool works wonders for her, producing "tall, hardy bean plants." Once more, the Emperor and Empress steal the tool, only to find that in their hands, it produces "prickly thorns, brambles" that inflict pain.

Enraged, the rulers force Willow to lead them to the source of these treasures. Upon reaching the summit, the Emperor and Empress selfishly snatch the gold key from Willow, ignoring her warnings about the silver key. They rush into the cave, and the door slams shut behind them. Because they failed to take the silver key, they are permanently trapped, fulfilling the proverb mentioned at the start of the story: "Curses like chickens... come home to roost."

The Reward for a Kind Soul

Following the rulers' disappearance, Willow returns to the mountain to apologize for the loss of the gold key. She finds the old woman's cabin has vanished, replaced by a permanent gift of a new hand mill and steel shovel, accompanied by a note of thanks. Willow and her father live in prosperity, continuing to share their bounty, while the greedy rulers remain locked away, serving as a reminder that true value is found in kindness, not in the hoarding of material wealth.
