Welcome back to the fourth session of week two in the Tinker Class, our specialized "crash course in Science Fun 101" designed for the "science seekers and inventoritos of tomorrow." Following the creative momentum sparked by our Wow in the World episode, "Rat Race," we are moving into the critical phase of the engineering design process: refinement.
Over the past three days, students have transitioned from initial conceptualization to hands-on construction. We began by jotting down thoughts and questions, gathered household materials to build a car for a stuffed animal, and successfully executed test runs on our "test tracks." Today, the focus shifts to the most vital part of invention: learning from failure and success to create a better version.
To begin this phase, you must look at the "data or information you collected from yesterday's test." Engineering is not just about building; it is about observing how your design performs under stress. Ask yourself: Did the car stay on the track? Was it fast, or did it wobble? By looking at these "observations," you can identify the specific areas where your prototype failed or succeeded.
Once you have identified these gaps, it is time to "revisit your design plan." We encourage all young inventors to "draw your improvement ideas on a piece of paper" before diving back into the construction phase. This step is crucial because it allows you to visualize your changes—whether that means adjusting the wheel alignment, adding weight for stability, or changing the chassis structure—before you commit to the build.
After finalizing your sketches, it is time to "modify or rebuild your car" to create your "Model 2.0." This iteration is where the real learning happens. By applying the lessons learned from your first round of testing, you are engaging in the scientific method, transforming a simple toy into a refined piece of engineering.
We want to hear about your progress! After you "retest and record your observations," we invite you to share your findings with the Tinker Class community. You can leave us a message on the "WOW hotline at 1-888-7-WOW-WOW." Be sure to describe "what you used to build your car and what you discovered when you ran it on the test track." Your insights might even be featured on the final day of our week two series. Additionally, you can upload pictures and videos of your creations at "Tinkercast.com/share."
While we continue our journey in the Tinker Class, there is much to look forward to in the Wow in the World community. November is set to be a "November to remember," featuring collaborations with Circle Round and Terrestrials, and a special appearance by Elmo on November 24th. Most importantly, we are preparing for our "250th episode" on December 1st, which will be a full-scale musical. Members of the World Organization of Wowzers are invited to join an exclusive early-access listening party on November 22nd to celebrate this milestone.
Keep tinkering, keep testing, and as always, "go forth and keep on wowing."
