The Whole Cart: A Tale of Wit and Retribution

The Deceptive Merchant and the Woodcutter's Plight

In this adaptation of a South Asian folktale, we are introduced to a traveling merchant described as a "trickster" and a "rascally rogue." This merchant makes his living through "devious schemes," specifically buying goods at "bargain basement prices" and selling them at prices that are "through the roof." During his travels, he encounters a humble woodcutter selling firewood from his cart.

The merchant, seeing an opportunity to exploit the woodcutter, asks to purchase the "whole cart." While the woodcutter intends to sell only the firewood, the merchant uses "tricky technicalities" to argue that the deal included the cart itself, the oxen, and the wood. By using the woodcutter's own words against him, the merchant successfully robs the man of his livelihood, leaving the woodcutter to return home in despair, feeling that the "mischievous scamp" had utterly taken advantage of him.

The Seamstress’s Counter-Scheme

Upon hearing her husband's tale, the woodcutter's wife—a skilled seamstress—decides to intervene. Recognizing that she is "in her husband's corner," she formulates a plan to teach the merchant a lesson he will "never forget." She spends the night sewing elegant garments and heads to the marketplace the next day.

When the merchant approaches, he is once again blinded by his own greed. He offers to buy all of her clothing for "two handfuls of coins." The seamstress agrees, and they shake on the deal, with the merchant still "cooking up another of his devious schemes."

The Turn of the Tables

When the merchant arrives at the inn to pay, he attempts to cheat the seamstress by offering two large silver dollars, claiming that since they are large, each one counts as a "handful." The seamstress, however, is prepared. She reveals a pair of "heavy-duty sewing shears" and calmly argues that if the payment is for the hands, she is entitled to the hands themselves.

This "bluff" works perfectly. The merchant, terrified that she will actually take his hands, pleads for mercy and agrees to return the woodcutter’s cart and oxen. The seamstress successfully secures the return of her husband’s property, along with additional payment.

Conclusion: Honesty and Support

Ultimately, the story serves as a moral lesson regarding the consequences of greed and the power of wit. The woodcutter and his wife live out their days in "comfort and contentment," while the merchant changes his ways, eventually doing business "honestly and fairly." The narrative highlights the importance of having someone "in your corner"—an advocate who stands by you during tough times—and encourages listeners to appreciate those who provide support and loyalty in their own lives.
