📋 Summary

Introduction: The Paradox of the Unjust Justice

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear narrates a folktale originating from Turkey and Central Asia titled "The Unjust Justice." The story centers on a newly appointed judge who, despite his academic credentials, fails to embody the core principles of his profession: fairness and trustworthiness. The narrative serves as a moral lesson, highlighting how greed can compromise one's integrity and how cleverness can be used to restore balance when justice is absent.

The Betrayal of Trust

The protagonist, a hardworking carpenter, arrives in a new town seeking to save money to return to his family. After being hired to renovate the judge's home, the carpenter expresses anxiety about the safety of his life savings—"half a dozen bags of gold coins." The judge, sensing an opportunity for theft, manipulates the carpenter by positioning himself as the only "fair or trustworthy" person in town, persuading the carpenter to entrust him with his gold. The carpenter, blinded by the judge's status, agrees. However, upon completion of the work, the judge denies ever seeing the carpenter, claiming he doesn't know him and threatening him with arrest. The carpenter is left destitute, highlighting the vulnerability of the innocent when faced with corrupt authority.

The Grocer’s Counter-Scheme

Desperate and dejected, the carpenter encounters a clever town grocer. Upon hearing his story, she concocts a plan to expose the judge's greed. The grocer presents herself as a wealthy woman preparing for a long journey, claiming she needs a "fair, someone trustworthy" to guard her treasure—a heavy chest filled with heavy groceries disguised as riches. By appealing to the judge’s greed, she lures him into a trap.

The Reversal of Fortune

As the judge is preoccupied with the prospect of stealing the grocer’s "treasures," the carpenter, following the grocer's instructions, arrives and demands his gold. Caught in the presence of a witness and fearing the loss of the new, larger "treasure," the judge immediately returns the carpenter’s gold, desperate to maintain his facade of being "fair and trustworthy."

Once the carpenter departs, the grocer’s daughter arrives to announce that her father has returned early, rendering the need for the judge’s services void. The grocer retrieves her wagon, leaving the judge empty-handed and humiliated. The story concludes with the judge realizing he had been "duped" by the very people he sought to swindle. This experience serves as a transformative moment for the judge, who thereafter commits himself to actually embodying the justice he was sworn to uphold.

Conclusion: The Lesson of Fairness

The tale of "The Unjust Justice" serves as a poignant reminder that status does not equate to character. Through the clever intervention of the grocer, the story illustrates that true justice often requires the courage to stand up against unfairness. By using the judge's own greed against him, the characters successfully restore fairness, ultimately forcing the judge to reconcile his actions with the high standards of his office.
