The Chilling Tales of Unsolved Disappearances

This episode of the Mr. Ballin Podcast explores two haunting, unsolved mysteries: the tragic case of the "Mommy is in the Trees" incident and the baffling disappearance of 19-year-old Bryce Laspisa.

Mommy is in the Trees: A Family Tragedy

In 1985, a toddler named Crystal was found wandering alone in a Kmart parking lot in Washington state. When questioned, the terrified child only repeated the phrase, "Mommy's in the trees." Investigators eventually discovered the body of her mother, Diana, in a forest near the Nisqually River, along with a red pickup truck belonging to Diana's partner, Michael Reamer.

Initially, police suspected Michael of murdering Diana and potentially two other victims, Stephen Harkins and Ruth Cooper, who had been killed in the same forest months prior. The presence of a "tube sock wrapped around her neck" on both Diana and Ruth suggested a singular perpetrator. However, the discovery of Michael’s remains 25 years later confirmed he could not have been the killer, as he had likely died around the same time as Diana. This led authorities to realize they were dealing with a "serial killer"—the "Tube Sock Killer"—who remains at large to this day. Crystal’s cryptic words remain the only eyewitness testimony to a horror that claimed multiple lives in the Pacific Northwest.

The Baffling Disappearance of Bryce Laspisa

In 2013, 19-year-old Bryce Laspisa, a student at Sierra College, began exhibiting "erratic" and "paranoid" behavior, reportedly fueled by alcohol and the stimulant Vyvanse. After a series of bizarre incidents, including giving away his valuable possessions and breaking up with his girlfriend, Bryce embarked on a drive back home to Laguna Niguel.

His journey was marked by strange stops in Buttonwillow, California, where he was found sitting in his car, "staring out into nothingness." Despite multiple police wellness checks, he refused to explain his behavior. Eventually, his car was found at the bottom of a 25-foot cliff near Castaic Lake. While the vehicle showed signs of an "intentional" crash, Bryce was nowhere to be found. Bloodhounds tracked his scent to a nearby truck stop, where the trail abruptly ended. Theories regarding his fate range from a "failed suicide attempt" and accidental death to the possibility that he is "living off the grid" after suffering a psychotic break. To this day, the truth behind Bryce's final movements remains an agonizing mystery for his family.
