📋 Summary

The True Mother: Wisdom Beyond Logic

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear presents a classic folktale from Japan titled "The True Mother." The story centers on a "wise judge" renowned for his "clever and unusual ways" of resolving disputes. When two women appear in his courtroom, both claiming to be the mother of the same "rosy-cheeked baby boy," the judge is faced with a dilemma that defies simple evidence.

The Failure of Conventional Tests

The judge attempts to discern the truth through traditional means, yet each effort proves futile. He examines the women for physical resemblance, but finds none. He attempts to see if the baby would "crawl to" one of the mothers, but the child remains indifferent, playing with his toes. Even when the women are given the chance to hold the baby, the infant bursts into tears with both of them, offering no clear indication of maternal bond. The judge is left "deep in thought," acknowledging that the case is "more difficult than I thought."

The Power of Creative Deception

To resolve the stalemate, the judge employs an extraordinary psychological tactic disguised as "fortune-telling." He requests a bowl of rice, a plate of noodles, and a pot of green tea. Under the guise of reading the future, he consumes his lunch while observing the women's reactions. He constructs a compelling vision of the future: a scenario 40 years later where the mother must toil in "rice fields" to support a "gravely ill" son.

This "clear vision of the future" serves as a litmus test for the women's true motivations. The woman in blue immediately rejects the premise, complaining that a child is supposed to care for her when she is "old and grey," revealing her selfish intent. Conversely, the woman in red expresses a selfless commitment, stating, "I love this boy with every bone in my body" and affirming her willingness to work to support him if he needs her.

The Verdict of Love

By framing the responsibility of motherhood as a burden of care rather than a benefit of future support, the judge successfully forces the truth to the surface. The woman in blue, unwilling to accept a future of labor, abandons her claim. The woman in red, demonstrating the "true" heart of a mother, is reunited with her child, who visibly responds to her love with a smile.

Ultimately, the judge’s "fortune-telling" was merely a ruse—as he admits, the tea was "just there to wash down my lunch." However, his creative approach effectively unmasked the imposter and protected the genuine bond between mother and child. The story serves as a poignant reminder that while logic has its place, true wisdom often requires imagination, empathy, and the ability to look past the surface to the heart of the matter.
