📋 Summary

The Shepherd's Disguise: A Tale of Deceit and True Wisdom

The Deceptive Advisor

In the kingdom featured in the German folk tale The Shepherd's Disguise, the Queen faces a recurring issue: her most trusted advisor, Lemel, is a fraud. While he presents himself as possessing a "brilliant brain," Lemel is actually a lazy courtier who spends his days "sneaking around" and "eavesdropping" on his colleagues. By stealing the ideas of his fellow advisors, he maintains his status as the Queen's favorite, often claiming, "I have spent days, no, months trying to figure out this tricky, tricky problem," when in reality, he has contributed nothing of substance.

The Queen’s Test

Suspicious of Lemel’s lack of original thought, the other advisors eventually confront the Queen. Seeking the truth, the Queen devises a high-stakes test. She summons Lemel and presents him with three "top secret" riddles:

  1. What is the difference between a rising sun and a setting sun?
  2. How far are the heavens from the earth?
  3. What am I thinking?

The Queen warns Lemel that he must answer these questions alone, without outside help, or face banishment from the kingdom. Terrified of losing his position, Lemel realizes he cannot "overhear the other advisors" to solve these complex problems.

The Shepherd’s Intervention

In a desperate attempt to avoid failure, Lemel travels to the countryside, hoping to find a commoner to exploit. He encounters a clever shepherd and, after admitting he is in a "pickle," proposes a scheme: they will swap clothes and roles. The shepherd agrees, donning Lemel’s "royal cloak" and heading to the palace, while Lemel stays behind to tend the sheep.

Upon arriving, the shepherd surprises the Queen with his wit. He answers the riddles with profound simplicity:

  • On the difference between the suns: "The whole world."
  • On the distance to the heavens: "The heavens are as far from the earth as the earth is from the heavens."
  • On the Queen’s thoughts: "Right now, you are thinking that I am Lemel... But the truth is, I am the shepherd."

A New Chapter

When the shepherd reveals his true identity, the Queen is shocked but impressed by his honesty and cleverness. She realizes that Lemel was never the source of her brilliant advice, remarking, "So much for him and his brilliant brain." The Queen promptly dismisses Lemel to the pastures, where he is surrounded by sheep—creatures with "no ideas to steal"—and invites the shepherd to become her new, authentic advisor.

This story serves as a timeless reminder that true wisdom is not found in deceit or by taking credit for the work of others. As the podcast concludes, it encourages listeners to value collaboration and honesty, reminding us that solving problems effectively requires working with others rather than trying to manipulate them.
