📋 Summary

The Sharpest Tack: A Lesson in Wit and Humility

In this episode of Circle Around, titled "The Sharpest Tack," listeners are treated to a classic folktale that explores the nature of intelligence, hubris, and the power of perspective. The story centers on the legendary figure Nasreddin, a character celebrated for being "sharper than the sharpest tack, brighter than the brightest button and slier than the sliest fox."

The Battle of Wits

The conflict begins when a conceited merchant, who prides herself on being the "cleverest one around," hears of Nasreddin’s reputation and feels threatened. Driven by a need to prove her superiority, the merchant challenges Nasreddin to a contest. Nasreddin, ever the strategist, agrees but requests time to retrieve her "box of tricks."

Through a series of manipulative requests—feigning that the merchant’s horse is "nervous and jumpy"—Nasreddin successfully convinces the merchant to surrender her velvet coat, fur hat, leather boots, and eventually her silk shirt and satin pants. By the time the merchant realizes she has been outwitted, she is left at her campsite in her undergarments, while Nasreddin rides away on the merchant’s own horse. This encounter establishes the core theme: true wit is not merely about being cunning, but about knowing how to manage one's opponent.

The Long Con

Months later, the merchant, having lost her business, becomes a border guard. Seeking revenge, she watches for Nasreddin, eventually spotting her crossing the border with a donkey laden with bales of straw. The guard, convinced that Nasreddin is smuggling something illegal, subjects the donkey to rigorous and "painful" searches every week for an entire year. Despite tearing the straw bales to shreds, the guard finds nothing.

During this time, Nasreddin’s lifestyle visibly improves; she becomes wealthier, donning "lavish" clothing and "sparkling jewels." The contrast between the guard’s frustration and Nasreddin’s calm demeanor—remaining "cool as a cucumber"—highlights the gap in their wisdom. The guard, blinded by her obsession with revenge, fails to look beyond the obvious.

The Final Lesson

Years later, the guard visits Nasreddin’s home to demand the truth. She asks, "What were you smuggling across the border?" Nasreddin’s answer is simple yet devastating: "Donkeys!"

The revelation that the donkeys themselves were the smuggled goods strikes the guard "like a lightning bolt." The guard had been so focused on searching the cargo that she completely ignored the mode of transportation.

Conclusion: The Value of Humility

The story concludes by emphasizing that Nasreddin’s goal was never just to trick, but to "teach them important lessons." By humbling the arrogant merchant-turned-guard, Nasreddin illustrates that genuine intelligence requires humility. As the narrator notes, to truly be "sharper than the sharpest tack," one must possess the self-awareness to see what is hidden in plain sight. This delightful tale serves as a reminder that arrogance often acts as a blindfold, while humility opens the mind to the truth.
