📋 Summary

The Infestation of Hamelin

The town of Hamelin was once a happy place until it faced a catastrophic plague of rats. These creatures were described as "three times as big as normal rats," with hair "four times as long" and teeth resembling knives. The infestation was so severe that the rats consumed all the food, polluted the water, and terrorized the children. The townspeople were desperate, and even the local cats were too afraid to confront the vermin. As the situation became untenable, the town faced the prospect of having to "leave Hamelin" entirely.

The Piper’s Intervention

Into this crisis walked a mysterious Piper, dressed in red and gold. He approached the mayor, boasting that he could "play the pipe ten times better than any other man" and promised to use his music to "get rid of the rats." The mayor, initially skeptical, was convinced after the Piper performed a demonstration that drew a bird to his shoulder. They struck a bargain: the Piper would eliminate 100% of the rats in exchange for a thousand pounds—an amount equivalent to the mayor's annual income.

Utilizing his hypnotic music, the Piper led the rats out of the town and into the river, where they "drowned." The townspeople celebrated, believing their ordeal was over. However, the mayor, driven by greed and dishonesty, refused to pay the full amount. He produced a single, smaller rat, claiming the Piper had failed to remove "every last one," and attempted to renegotiate the fee down to nine hundred pounds. The Piper, recognizing the mayor's deceit, warned him that he would regret this decision, famously noting, "I won't need it where I'm going."

The Retribution

Seeking vengeance for the mayor's betrayal, the Piper returned to the streets and played a different, haunting melody. This time, the music enchanted the town's children. Just as he had done with the rats, he led them in a line, marching them through the forest and up into the mountains. When they reached the mountain, the rock face opened like a door, and the children "disappeared" inside with the Piper before the entrance sealed shut.

Only three children remained: one who had a "limp" and could not keep pace, one who was "blind" and lost her way, and one who was "deaf" and could not hear the music. Through their accounts, the parents learned that the Piper had taken the children as punishment for the mayor’s broken contract. Realizing the truth, the townspeople turned against the mayor, viewing him as a "rat" for his treachery. The story concludes with the tragic loss of the children and the eventual disappearance of the mayor, leaving Hamelin in a silence that lasted for hundreds of years.
