📋 Summary

The Disappearance of the Sund Trio

On February 12, 1999, Carol Sund, her 15-year-old daughter Julie, and Julie's 16-year-old friend Silvina Peloso embarked on a trip to Stockton and Yosemite National Park. Their journey, intended to be a joyful exploration of the park's "astonishing cliff sides" and "snow-covered mountains," took a dark turn when they checked into the Cedar Lodge near Yosemite. On February 16, they failed to meet Carol’s husband, Jens, at the San Francisco airport as planned. Despite a massive search, the women vanished without a trace, leaving police to initially struggle with the lack of evidence of "foul play."

The Discovery and the False Lead

A breakthrough occurred when Carol’s wallet was found in Modesto, signaling that a "third party" was involved. On March 18, a hiker discovered a "skeleton of a car" in a remote forest—the victims' red rental sedan. Inside the trunk were the burned remains of Carol and Silvina, with their "hands still bound behind their backs." Julie remained missing until a "crude map" in an anonymous letter led police to her body at Don Pedro Lake, accompanied by the chilling note: "We had fun with this one."

Police initially focused on two half-brothers, Eugene Dykes and Michael Lorwick, due to their criminal history and "self-incriminating remarks." However, this was a tragic diversion; the police had not actually captured the true killer.

The Yosemite Tragedy Continues

Four months later, while the public was falsely assured that the killers were "behind bars," another tragedy struck. Joey Armstrong, a 26-year-old naturalist at Yosemite, went missing. Her cabin was found with her truck doors open, suggesting she was interrupted while loading her vehicle. Searchers eventually discovered her body, which had been "beheaded," a detail that shocked the public and confirmed that a serial killer remained at large.

The Capture and Confession of Cary Stayner

The investigation into Joey Armstrong’s murder moved quickly after a witness spotted a "blue 1979 International Scout" near the cabin. Police tracked the vehicle to Cary Stayner, the handyman at the Cedar Lodge. Upon his arrest at a nudist resort, Stayner dropped a "bombshell" confession, admitting to the murders of all four women.

Stayner revealed his long-held "fantasy" to kill a young woman, a dark desire he had harbored since he was seven. He described how he gained access to the women’s room at Cedar Lodge by posing as a handyman concerned about a "leak." He then systematically restrained and murdered Carol, Silvina, and Julie, later moving their bodies and attempting to confuse investigators with the "crude map" and the wallet in Modesto.

A Chilling Conclusion

Perhaps most distressing was the recovery of Carol’s camera. The final photos showed the women enjoying their trip, unaware that Stayner was "secretly watching" them. The last image taken by Julie showed her mother and friend moments before Stayner knocked on their door. Stayner, who showed "no remorse" for his crimes, was sentenced to death, leaving behind a legacy of terror that shattered the peace of Yosemite National Park.
