Life’s Mundane yet Memorable Chronicles

In this episode, Emma Chamberlain invites listeners into a "storytime era" that eschews the exaggerated, engagement-driven lies common on social media. Instead, she presents a collection of "true, real, and mediocre at best" stories that anchor her simple, predictable life, proving that even mundane occurrences can become compelling through storytelling.

The Ghost in the Sock Drawer

Emma recounts a bizarre experience in her home that left her genuinely rattled. After returning from a weekend outing, she discovered two pairs of "mustard yellow socks" placed conspicuously in her home—one on the staircase and one in her closet. She emphasizes that these specific socks were buried at the bottom of a deep drawer and hadn't been worn in a year. Given her history with a spiritual guide who claimed a "small young boy" ghost lived in her house, and a traumatic past event where the ghost allegedly triggered her home alarm system, Emma felt certain this was a supernatural prank. She notes the incident was so strange that a witness present at her home corroborated the oddity, leaving her to hope the spirit "comes in peace" and refrains from further alarming behavior.

The Yoga Studio Paradox

Transitioning to her hot yoga practice, Emma explores the "culty" nature of LA fitness classes. She describes a moment of irony when, after an instructor credited a TikTok fitness influencer for a workout routine, a woman next to her loudly exclaimed, "fuck influencers." The entire room erupted in agreement. Despite being an influencer herself, Emma found the situation hilarious rather than offensive. She reflects on the valid frustrations people have toward influencers—who often showcase "incredibly comfortable lives"—while simultaneously advocating for community kindness over open hatred.

The Bully of the Yoga Room

Emma also shares a story about "Patty," a regular at her studio known for being territorial. Patty famously "ripped a new one" to a friend of Emma's for taking her "spot" in the room. This behavior culminated in a verbal brawl when a man occupied that same corner. Emma observes that seeing Patty finally get "stood up to" was a fascinating lesson in adult bullying, noting that it is rare to see such behavior challenged so directly.

The Tabby Shoe Incident

Perhaps the most "disgusting" tale involves Emma stepping in what she believes was "human shit" while wearing her signature Margiela Tabby flats in downtown Los Angeles. Because the shoes feature a "slit all the way through" the toe, the incident was particularly harrowing. She credits a close friend for his heroic actions: he sat on a curb, removed his own shoe for her to wear, and cleaned her Tabbies to "perfection" using Clorox wipes and water. Emma uses this to set a high bar for relationships, jokingly advising listeners, "If your boyfriend wouldn't do that for you, break up with him."

Paparazzi and Fragrance Origins

Rounding out the episode, Emma reflects on two final topics: a mortifying encounter with paparazzi outside a luxury store in West Hollywood where her awkward, startled reaction felt like a "cringe freak" moment, and the story of her signature scent. She reveals that her perfume choice, Baccarat Rouge 540, originated from a "villain origin story" following a painful breakup where the scent haunted her apartment. She eventually adopted the fragrance as her own to reclaim it—a move she describes as a "fuck you" to her ex who had previously denied her the chance to wear it.

Ultimately, Emma’s stories serve as a reminder that life is a mix of small, strange, and occasionally embarrassing moments, and that there is beauty in sharing these human experiences without the need for manufactured drama.

📖 Transcript

Welcome to story time.
Okay. I've compiled a collection of short stories recently that I'm overjoyed to share with you because I love telling stories but I never get to tell stories because I live a very simple life.
I follow the same routine almost every single day and so I rarely have stories to tell because my life is somewhat predictable.
Like people would assume that my life is much more dynamic than it actually is.
I wake up, I do pretty much the same thing every single day and then I go to sleep.
And there are a few times a year when interesting things happen.
