📋 Summary

The Legend of the Bad Breath Lion

This episode of Super Great Kids Stories features a captivating fable titled "Bad Breath Lion," narrated by storyteller Nell Phoenix. Originating from the ancient Indian collection known as the Panchatantra, the story traveled through Persia and the Middle East before reaching Europe, where it was famously adapted by Aesop. The narrative serves as a timeless cautionary tale about power, honesty, and the value of quick thinking.

The Lion’s Hubris and the Perilous Test

The story centers on a self-proclaimed king of the forest—a lion with a "wicked glint in their eye" and a "rumbling belly." Seeking a new best friend, the lion announces his desire with a "loud and thunderous" roar. While various animals initially aspire to the role, they soon realize the grim fate of the lion’s previous companions upon observing his "big, bulging belly."

Three animals ultimately volunteer for the lion's test: a crocodile, a bear, and a small, grey, fluffy hare. The test is simple yet deadly: the lion exhales his "hot, moist and really smelly" breath directly into the candidate's face and demands an honest assessment.

The Failure of Sincerity

The crocodile and the bear fall victim to their own honesty and lack of guile. When the lion asks the crocodile for his opinion, the crocodile truthfully declares, "your breath is foul," preferring to "stuff my nose with bees" than endure the stench. The lion, displeased by this blunt honesty, consumes the crocodile. Similarly, the bear attempts to be polite but fails to think quickly, leading to his own demise. In the world of this tyrant, there is truly "no pleasing some people."

The Hare’s Ingenious Deception

The final candidate, the small hare, manages to survive through a "hare-brained idea." Recognizing the lion's vanity and the danger of the situation, the hare feigns a cold, speaking as if he has a "nose full of snot" so he cannot smell anything at all. By tricking the lion, the hare buys his life and eventually plots to end the lion's tyranny for good.

The Final Resolution

Using his wit, the hare leads the lion to a well, claiming it contains a "bigger, scarier lion." When the lion peers into the water, he sees his own reflection. Driven by rage and his own "wicked" nature, the lion roars and lunges at the reflection, only to fall into the well. This clever ruse ends the lion's reign, allowing the other animals to "live happily ever after."

Ultimately, the story illustrates that while brute strength and intimidation—symbolized by the lion's "sharp teeth and claws"—may dominate for a time, intellect and resourcefulness are the true tools for overcoming oppression. The episode concludes with a reminder of the power of storytelling to connect listeners across the globe, from the US to Zambia and New Zealand, reinforcing the importance of shared narratives in our lives.
