📋 Summary

The Legend of Tiki Tiki: A Chilling Encounter in Hokkaido

This story, recounted in the tradition of campfire tales, centers on a harrowing and supernatural event that allegedly took place in Hokkaido, Japan, during the 1970s. It serves as a grim cautionary tale that has evolved into a modern urban legend, warning listeners that hearing the story may invite a deadly encounter with the entity known as "Tiki Tiki."

The Incident on the Tracks

On a freezing winter night, a train driver named Takashi Ito and his assistant were operating a small cargo train through a "desolate area" of Hokkaido. While attempting to warm the cabin by opening a floor vent, Takashi caught sight of a woman standing motionless in the middle of the tracks. Despite their desperate attempts to stop, the train struck her. Upon investigation, they discovered a horrific scene: the woman had been severed in two, with her legs wedged in the tracks and her torso discarded a short distance away. The upper body, unnervingly, appeared to possess an "accusatory look," as if blaming the men for the tragedy.

The Disappearance and the Pursuit

Takashi remained with the train while his assistant ventured out into the pitch-black, freezing night to seek help. Alone in the cabin, Takashi began to drift into a state of exhaustion, haunted by the image of the woman’s remains. His peace was shattered by a rhythmic, metallic "grinding" sound. When the door to the cabin slid open, his screams were the last sound heard from him.

When the assistant returned with police, they found no trace of Takashi. Following a trail of blood and boot prints, they eventually discovered Takashi’s lifeless body draped over a high-altitude platform on a utility pole. The "murderous upper half" of the woman was perched above him. As the creature descended the pole, the men fled, hearing the distinct, repetitive sound of "chick chick chick"—the noise created by her dragging herself through the snow. This sound is why she is famously known as Tiki Tiki.

The Curse and Survival

While the assistant was eventually caught and killed by the entity, the police officers managed to escape and report the nightmare. The woman’s upper body was never recovered, and locals believe she still haunts the Hokkaido railroad tracks. The legend carries a terrifying post-script: those who hear the story have only three days to live unless they encounter the spirit and answer a specific question correctly.

According to the lore, before Tiki Tiki strikes, she will ask: "Do you need your legs?" To survive, one must respond exactly with the phrase: "Yes, need them right now." This chilling narrative remains a staple of the "Strange, Dark and Mysterious" genre, serving as both a cautionary tale and a dark piece of Japanese folklore.

📖 Transcript

So tonight, I have a great story to tell you.
It sort of reminds me of when I was a kid.
I used to go camping with my family once a year out in Western Massachusetts and we would sit around a campfire just like this and my parents would tell me and my sisters ghost stories.
And it was sort of unclear how true the stories really were, but they were always terrifying.
And this story that I'm going to share with you tonight is from Japan, and it happened about 50 years ago.
And over the last 50 years it's been shared many, many times and there are many versions of the story, so it's sort of up to you to figure out how much you really believe is true here.
