📋 Summary

From Childhood Roots to Executive Leadership

Somya Fareed Silber, the newly appointed CEO of Edible Brands, describes her relationship with the company as that of a "seventh sibling." Having grown up alongside the brand since its founding, she worked in stores during her middle school years, absorbing the fundamentals of "customer service" and "quality" that would eventually inform her leadership style. After gaining external experience at an ad agency, she returned to the company full-time in 2016, working as a product owner in the tech team. Her journey to the CEO role involved navigating through operations, managing the Canadian market, and serving as the VP of e-commerce, a position she identifies as one of her most rewarding roles for its impact on growing the brand's "e-commerce offering and footprint."

The Role of Tech and Personalization

Silber emphasizes that technology is "foundational to the business," particularly because much of their infrastructure is proprietary. By utilizing "two-week sprints," her tech team maintains a nimble approach, allowing them to "test and learn" continuously. This technological agility is central to her strategy of creating "personalized experiences." By leveraging the "incredible amount of data" the company possesses, she aims to tailor interactions—ranging from product categories and price points to promotions—to meet individual customer needs. This data-driven mindset is a cornerstone of her management style, though she balances it with "heart and gut feeling" to ensure decision-making remains holistic.

Strategic Growth and Market Evolution

Under her leadership, Edible Brands has significantly expanded its product portfolio beyond its traditional fruit arrangements. The introduction of "flowers," "bake shop lines" (cookies, cheesecakes, brownies), and "shelf-stable products" like chocolates and popcorn has helped the company reach a younger demographic, specifically "Gen Z." These additions are designed to increase purchase frequency and offer lower price points, moving the brand beyond occasional gifting. Furthermore, Silber is leaning into the "self-gifting" trend and the post-pandemic rise in "gatherings and hosting," with upcoming launches like large-format dessert boards aimed at capturing more market share.

Franchising and Organizational Culture

Edible Brands operates on a franchise model that allows them to reach "75% of households in the US within an hour." Silber views the relationship with franchisees as a collaborative "waterfall effect," where corporate provides national "seasonal playbooks" and assets, while franchisees tailor content to their specific communities. To maintain a high retention rate and a productive culture, she prioritizes "open lines of communication" and transparency. She fosters an environment where "no idea is a bad idea," encouraging employees to bring their best ideas forward without fear of failure.

Balancing Leadership and Parenthood

As a mother of a two-year-old, Silber is vocal about the importance of setting "non-negotiables." She adheres to a strict rule of being home by 5:00 PM to spend time with her daughter, relying on a strong support system at the office—including an executive assistant and a chief of staff—to manage her schedule efficiently. Her advice to the next generation of female leaders is to combat "imposter syndrome" by speaking up in boardrooms and participating actively. She believes that the sooner women claim their "seat at the table," the more natural that leadership role becomes. Looking ahead, her goal is to drive "enterprise value" while honoring the brand's 25-year heritage through continued innovation and strategic reintroduction to the market.
