📋 Summary

The Unfolding Tragedy in Rochester

In November 1971, the quiet routine of Rochester, New York, was shattered by the disappearance of 10-year-old Carmen Cologne. Before her body was discovered in the town of Riga, commuters on the Western Expressway witnessed a harrowing scene: a young girl, partially naked, running toward traffic while being pursued by a car driving in reverse. Despite the visibility of this event, the "bystander effect" prevented anyone from intervening or reporting it, as drivers rationalized the horror away. When Carmen’s body was eventually found, an autopsy revealed she had been sexually assaulted and died of manual strangulation.

A Chilling Pattern Emerges

The investigation into Carmen’s death struggled for traction, marked by false leads and the bizarre taunting of police via a message scrawled in a public restroom claiming, "I killed a ten-year-old girl. Who will be next?" The case remained cold until the spring of 1973, when 11-year-old Wanda Walcoitz vanished while running a late-afternoon errand. Her body was found the next day in Webster. While investigators noted striking similarities—both girls were young, disappeared during errands, and were sexually assaulted and strangled—there were distinct differences in the modus operandi. Unlike Carmen, Wanda was fully clothed and showed evidence of having been fed custard by her abductor, suggesting a potential ruse to gain her trust.

The Escalation: The Murder of Michelle Mayenza

In November 1973, the nightmare returned when 11-year-old Michelle Mayenza failed to return home from school. Her body was discovered shortly thereafter in Macedon. Like Wanda, Michelle had been sexually assaulted, strangled, and fed—this time, remnants of a cheeseburger were found in her stomach. The consistent presence of white cat hairs on the victims and the forensic finding that all three perpetrators (or the single perpetrator) possessed a blood characteristic found in only 20% of the population (a "non-secretor") strongly suggested the cases were linked.

The Investigation and the "Coincidence" Debate

Throughout the decades, law enforcement chased various suspects, including Carmen’s uncle, Miguel Cologne, and individuals like Kenneth and Dennis, who were later cleared via DNA testing. A significant, albeit confusing, development occurred in 2011 with the arrest of serial killer Joseph Nazo in California. Nazo had lived in Rochester during the time of the abductions and possessed a "list of 10" referencing locations where bodies were found. However, DNA evidence from Wanda’s case failed to link him to these specific crimes.

Today, the Rochester cases remain a haunting collection of questions. While some investigators and the public maintain that the double initials and the specific nature of the crimes point to a single predator, others argue the similarities are mere coincidence. The lack of definitive DNA matches in the surviving samples has left the families of Carmen, Wanda, and Michelle without closure, marking these events as a tragic, unsolved chapter in American true crime history.
