📋 Summary

The Myth of Erlang and the Ten Suns: A Tale of Nature, Grief, and Balance

Introduction: The Changing Nature of Our World

In this episode of Chinese Folk Tales, host Lisa O'Sullivan recounts a poignant myth that explores the delicate relationship between humanity and the natural world. The story begins by challenging our perception of reality, asking, "How many suns can you see?" While we observe only one sun today, the narrative transports us to an ancient era when ten suns scorched the earth, serving as a reminder that the world is in a constant state of flux and that we must cherish what we have.

The Banishment and the Birth of Erlang

The tale follows the second daughter of the ruler of heaven, who, driven by curiosity and boredom, descends to the mortal realm. Despite her father’s warnings, she embraces the human world, eventually falling in love with a mortal named Young. Their union displeases the ruler of heaven, who subsequently banishes her to earth, trapping her beneath the Wuli Hills. It is here that her son, Erlang, is born. Gifted with divine heritage, Erlang possesses extraordinary "magic powers," including the ability to perform "eight times nine transformations," move mountains, and empty seas.

Grief and the Destruction of the Suns

The emotional core of the story centers on Erlang’s rescue of his mother. After freeing her, he leaves her on a rock to fetch water, a task complicated by the extreme drought caused by the ten suns. Tragically, upon his return, he finds only "a pile of skin and bones." Consumed by "grief," Erlang blames the ten "blazing suns" for his mother’s death. Driven by vengeance, he uses his powers to crush nine of the suns between mountains, effectively ending the intense heat that had ravaged the land.

The Final Sun and the Intervention of Heaven

The last remaining sun, fearing for its life, hides beneath the leaves of a "wingpod purslane" plant. Erlang’s search for the final sun is aided by a treacherous worm that reveals its location. However, before Erlang can destroy the final sun, the ruler of heaven intervenes. He explains that "the sky, the air and the earth all need sunshine" for life to persist. Erlang, showing wisdom beyond his anger, relents, allowing the sun to return to the sky. As a reward for his growth and his devotion to his mother, the ruler of heaven elevates Erlang to the status of a god and his bodyguard.

The Natural Legacy

The story concludes by explaining the origins of certain natural phenomena. The sun, grateful to the wingpod purslane for its shelter, blessed the plant so it would never fear the heat again; the "delicate white marks" on its leaves are said to be the remnants of the sun’s presence. Conversely, the worm was cursed to "shrivel up" whenever exposed to the sun, explaining why they never appear in the daylight.

Ultimately, the myth serves as a moral lesson: while nature can be harsh and potentially destructive, it is an essential component of life. The host emphasizes that like everything in nature, the sun exists for a reason, and if we approach the world with care and respect, our hard work will be rewarded.
