📋 Summary

The Deceptive Trade

In the folktale "The Rusty Cowbell," a hard-working mother named Calliope and her son, Finn, find themselves struggling to pay rent to a "greedy landlord." Faced with financial ruin, Calliope instructs Finn to sell their beloved cow, Maggie, for 300 silver coins. However, upon arriving at the market, the landlord exploits Finn’s naivety, convincing the boy that his cow is "scrawny" and "dull as a cloudy sky." By insisting that the animal is worth only 30 silver coins—a fraction of its value—the landlord manipulates Finn into a disadvantageous trade, clearly acting as a "selfish, penny-pinching man who will do anything to trick people out of their money."

The Clever Counter-Scheme

Realizing her son had been swindled, Calliope devises a plan to teach the landlord a lesson. She takes the 30 coins and visits the local butcher, baker, and cheesemaker. She pays each of them 10 coins in advance for goods she intends to collect the following day, instructing them to act as if she has "already paid" when she returns. The vendors are "perplexed" by her request but agree to the arrangement. To finalize her trap, Calliope removes the "rusty old cowbell" from Maggie’s neck, intending to use it as the centerpiece of her ruse.

The Illusion of the Magic Bell

When the landlord arrives to collect the rent, Calliope directs him to the marketplace. She leads him to the butcher, baker, and cheesemaker, ordering food at each stop. Each time, she rings the rusty cowbell, and the vendors, following the previous day's agreement, declare that she owes them nothing. The landlord, a "covetous" man who "never said no to free food," becomes convinced that the bell possesses magical properties. He envisions a life of "free food, free drinks, not to mention free clothing, free jewels," and eventually offers to cancel two years of rent in exchange for the bell.

The Joke's on the Landlord

Calliope accepts the trade and returns home. The landlord, ecstatic with his new "treasure," rushes to the fishmonger to claim free goods. However, when he rings the bell, the fishmonger demands payment, citing a cost of "200 silver coins." Despite ringing the bell "more vigorously" and dashing between stalls, the landlord is met with the same reality: he is expected to pay for everything. He eventually realizes that "when you play a trick on someone it isn't always a treat." The story concludes with the landlord suffering the consequences of his greed, proving that his attempt to exploit others ultimately left him empty-handed and foolish.
