The Fisherman and the Enchanted Jar: A Storytelling Journey

In this episode of Grim, Grimmer, Grimmest, host Adam Gidwitz welcomes guest Sana Ali Muhammad to share a classic tale from the 1001 Nights tradition. Departing from his usual German folklore repertoire, Gidwitz explores a story that spans India, the Middle East, and beyond, focusing on a humble fisherman, a terrifying djinn, and a magical kingdom hidden beneath the waves.

The Fisherman's Unlucky Day

The story follows a poor fisherman who is constrained by a peculiar rule: he can only cast his net three times a day. After two failed attempts—pulling up a "dead donkey" and a "toilet" rather than a fish—the fisherman is desperate for a catch to feed his family. On his third attempt, he retrieves a "copper jar" instead of dinner. Upon opening it, he unwittingly releases a "gargantuan djinn" whose "head was as wide as an ox cart" and whose "teeth were like large stones."

A Deadly Negotiation

The djinn, having been trapped for nearly 500 years, is in a state of "gargantuan gin tantrum." Instead of granting the fisherman wishes, the djinn offers him the "gift of deciding how you die." The fisherman, realizing he is dealing with a creature that is "weird, and sometimes gross, and often scary," must use his wits to survive. He employs a classic fisherman’s tactic—playing on the djinn's pride—to trick the powerful being back into the jar, proving that even a "stacked" djinn can be outsmarted by a clever human.

The Promise of the Three Fish

After agreeing to a deal to provide the fisherman with fish instead of death, the djinn helps him catch three magical fish: one red, one blue, and one golden. These fish lead the fisherman to the Sultan, but the situation turns supernatural when the fish are placed in a frying pan. Each time the pan hits the heat, the "kitchen walls were cracking open," and a beautiful lady dressed in colors matching the fish appears to ask, "Fish, if I keep my promise to you, will you keep your promise to me?"

A Kingdom Awakened

Following the mysterious occurrences in the kitchen, the Sultan and the fisherman return to the lake. The Sultan, fearing the "beautiful women who can walk through walls," throws the fish back into the water. This act triggers a magical transformation: the lake churns, and a "castle" rises from the depths, awakening a kingdom of people who had been trapped as fish.

Conclusion: Choosing How to Live

The story concludes on a note of redemption. The fisherman is granted the castle by the Sultan, and he chooses to live there with his family. Even the djinn eventually returns to visit, and the two share a laugh over their initial encounter. As the fisherman wisely notes, "I chose how to live," marking a shift from the grim nature of the tale to a "happily ever after" ending. Through this collaborative storytelling session, Gidwitz and Muhammad remind us that even the scariest fairy tales can hold lessons about wit, kindness, and the choices we make.
