📋 Summary

The Artistic Ambition Turned Deadly

Mark Twitchell, an aspiring filmmaker from Edmonton, Canada, harbored dreams of Hollywood success. After a modest breakthrough with a Star Wars fan-fiction project, Twitchell sought to elevate his career by creating a feature film about a serial killer. Obsessed with the television show Dexter, Twitchell was fascinated by the concept of a "kill room"—a space meticulously prepared with "plastic sheeting" to contain blood and evidence. Seeking authenticity that would make his film a cinematic masterpiece, Twitchell decided to move beyond fiction and commit real-life acts of violence, documenting his experiences in a 42-page script titled SK Confessions (Serial Killer Confessions).

The Lure: A Digital Trap

Twitchell utilized online dating platforms to target vulnerable men, creating fake female personas like "Sheena" and "Jen." He lured his victims to a detached garage, providing "customized set of directions" that avoided specific addresses, instead using local landmarks. The garage was transformed into a staged kill room, draped in plastic to mimic the aesthetic of his favorite show.

In October 2008, he successfully trapped Giles Tetreault, a security guard reeling from a recent divorce. Armed with a "stun baton," a "fake" plastic gun, and a hockey mask, Twitchell attempted to incapacitate Tetreault. Despite being subdued and taped, Tetreault managed a desperate escape, eventually flagging down a passing couple. Although the attacker attempted to pass the assault off as a "game," Tetreault survived and eventually reported the harrowing experience to the police.

The Tragic End of Johnny Altinger

Undeterred by his failure to kill Tetreault, Twitchell struck again just one week later. Johnny Altinger, a quality control worker, fell for the same ruse. Upon arriving at the garage, he encountered Twitchell, who posed as a designer named "Harry" to lower Altinger’s guard. When Altinger returned later, he was ambushed with a "metal pipe." Unlike Tetreault, Altinger could not escape. Twitchell brutally murdered him, later dismembering the body and disposing of the remains and the plastic evidence in a "sewer drain."

The Script as a Confession

The investigation reached a turning point when police discovered Twitchell’s laptop. The 42-page script contained precise, chilling details of the attack on Giles Tetreault—information that had not been made public. It became clear that Twitchell was not merely writing a screenplay; he was "living his movie and writing the script in real time." The document served as a literal confession, proving that his desire to be a "bona fide filmmaker" had driven him to commit cold-blooded murder. The script ended abruptly, suggesting that Twitchell intended to continue his killing spree to fuel further chapters of his horrific project. Ultimately, the evidence found within the pages of SK Confessions led to Twitchell’s conviction, resulting in a life sentence behind bars.
