📋 Summary

The Tale of the Selfish Couple

In this episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Sheer presents a Russian folktale titled "The Patched-Up Coat." The story centers on a man and woman living on a hill who are described as "especially selfish." Their lack of generosity is evident in their daily interactions: they demand a cake in exchange for a cup of sugar and charge ten silver coins for a simple ride in their cart. Their stinginess reaches a peak when a weary soldier, returning from battle, seeks shelter. Despite having an "enormous iron pot" of soup and a "fresh baked apple pie," they force the soldier to eat "cold, lumpy porridge" and sleep on the cold floor, refusing to share even their "precious firewood."

The Soldier’s Clever Deception

Recognizing the couple’s greed, the soldier devises a plan to teach them a lesson. He smears butter on his face to appear as though he is sweating profusely, then complains that the room is "hot and stuffy," requesting that windows and doors be opened. By pretending that his "shabby, patched-up coat" is the source of his intense warmth, he creates a mystery that leaves the couple "positively flummoxed."

Convinced that the coat possesses magical, heat-retaining properties, the couple becomes desperate to acquire it. They offer the soldier a "lovely goose-down jacket," a fine horse, and a "bag of silver coins" in exchange for his threadbare garment. The soldier feigns hesitation, successfully baiting the couple into the trade, and departs with his new riches, leaving the couple with a coat that offers no protection against the biting winter wind.

A Transformation of Character

After the soldier leaves, the couple discovers the truth: the coat is not magical, and it provides no warmth. The husband, forced to endure the "biting, cutting gust of wind" while traveling to the market, eventually returns home, but not before picking up travelers along the way. This act of giving someone a ride marks the first time the selfish man has ever offered help to others.

The experience serves as a powerful turning point. Realizing they had been tricked by their own greed, the couple vows to change their ways and never give anyone the "cold shoulder" again. The story concludes by encouraging listeners to reflect on how they can assist those in need—whether by donating clothing, collecting food, or volunteering time—ultimately teaching that when we help others, we make the world a "warmer, sunnier place."
