📋 Summary

The Myth of Night and Day: Seeking Balance Through Sacrifice

In the podcast episode "Night and Day," Rebecca Shear presents a captivating adaptation of a folktale originating from the Yoruba people of Western Africa and Brazil. The narrative explores the existential necessity of rhythm and balance in life, using the metaphorical transition from an "endless string of continuous" daylight to a cyclical existence of night and day.

The Problem of Perpetual Sunlight

At the beginning of time, the earth was bathed in "constant" golden rays. While this provided warmth, it left the inhabitants "out of sync." Without the natural boundary of night, the villagers were unable to determine when to "sleep," "eat," or "work." The story likens this to eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for every meal; even a good thing becomes overwhelming when there is no variation. The people were "famished," "snoozing" intermittently, and fundamentally disoriented by the unrelenting sun.

The Goddesses of Two Worlds

Deep beneath the ocean, where it was "dark and shadowy and cool," lived Yemaya, the goddess of the waters, and her daughter Oya, the goddess of the winds. Oya, weary of the "cloak of darkness" at the bottom of the sea, yearned to experience the surface. Despite Yemaya’s warnings that they "belong in the world below" and are not meant to "reside in the world of light," Oya ventures to the surface, disguising herself as a mortal. She finds the world above enchanting until the constant light begins to drain her vitality, leaving her "listless" and "drained."

The Introduction of Darkness

Realizing she is fading, Oya confesses her divine identity to the village chieftess. To restore her strength and provide the village with a necessary "pause" from the sun, Oya devises a plan. She tasks the chieftess with using a seashell necklace to breathe underwater and retrieve a "big black bag" of darkness from Yemaya. Yemaya explicitly warns that the darkness is for Oya only and "must not be shared."

However, witnessing the villagers' exhaustion, Oya defies her mother’s command. She opens the bag, releasing a "twisting, twirling swirl of darkness" that brings the first night to the world. This allows the people to finally "rest," "repose," "drowse," and "doze."

The Creation of the Celestial Cycle

When Yemaya discovers Oya’s disobedience, she releases not just darkness, but also "night creatures"—owls, frogs, and tigers—which initially causes the villagers to "fall into a panic." To soothe their fears, Oya transforms the environment into a structured cycle. She tosses a burning stick into the sky to become the Moon, scatters sparks to create the stars for navigation, and appoints birds as messengers to "sing most sweetly at dawn."

Through these actions, Oya establishes the natural rhythm of life: "day, night, then day again." The story concludes with Oya finding personal harmony, splitting her time between the "bright warm rays of the sun" and the "cool dark of eternal night." This tale serves as a poignant reminder that nature’s beauty and human health rely fundamentally on the presence of both light and shadow, work and rest.
