📋 Summary

Embracing the Season: Winter, Resilience, and the Joy of Books

The Philosophy of Winter and Bookstore Life

For the author, winter is a season defined by "slowness" and the intentional act of "hurrying a little less." As a first-time bookstore owner, this winter became a profound learning experience, forcing the author to "let go and know that unexpected things will always happen." Despite the initial "excitement and, naturally, nervous" feelings, the author focused on creating a welcoming space, dedicating areas to used books and crystals, and decorating for the holiday season to offer a warm retreat for the community.

Navigating Personal and External Challenges

Life, however, did not go entirely as planned. The Pacific Northwest faced "historic flooding" and "harsh rainstorms," which created an "icy, muddy mess" and triggered significant anxiety for the author. Having previously recovered from a "nervous breakdown," the author utilized "journaling, meditation, nature walks, and arts and crafts" to remain present. The core advice offered during these trying times is simple yet transformative: "Be gentle towards yourself. Sometimes there is nothing to resolve, nothing to do. Sometimes you just need to be allowed to feel."

The Creative Journey: The Woods and Wisp

Amidst these challenges, the author found hope through the completion of their own book, The Woods and Wisp. Written for "whimsical adults" and children alike, the book explores themes of nature, soul, and finding "hope in a very gentle way." It serves as a testament to the author’s own journey toward becoming a "resilient and stronger person." By choosing to self-publish, the author reclaimed control over the "quality of the book" and the overall reader experience, ensuring it aligns with their vision of a peaceful and meaningful literary work.

A Year in Reading: From Cozy Escapes to Deep Reflections

Despite the "overwhelmed and overstimulated" nature of parenting a toddler, the author maintained a rich reading life. Their literary journey this year spanned multiple genres:

  • Cozy and Whimsical: Books like The House Witch and Howl's Moving Castle provided comfort during stressful moments, reinforcing the author's love for "wholesome" and "cozy fantasy" reads.
  • Poetic and Spiritual: To Bless the Space Between Us by John O'Donoghue was highlighted for its ability to find "beauty and value" regardless of the reader's belief system.
  • Challenging and Thought-Provoking: Circe by Madeline Miller stood out for its "incredible" writing and poignant exploration of mortality. Meanwhile, The Indifferent Stars Above was praised for its educational depth and its power to "inspire you to keep going" by showcasing human resilience.
  • Personal Growth: The Highly Sensitive Parent proved "incredibly important," helping the author manage the pressures of parenthood and rewrite their internal narrative toward a more "healthy and balanced version" of themselves.

Looking Ahead

As the author closes the chapter on this winter, they emphasize the importance of giving ourselves time, noting that "all things shall indeed change and pass." With goals to continue exploring new genres while returning to "tried and true favorites," the author remains committed to sharing the "cozy" and "wholesome" stories that define their bookstore and their life.

📖 Transcript

Winter, to me, is the time for slowness, to hurry a little less and be a little more, to steal that extra minute under a warm fleece blanket and, above all else, the time for visiting cozy bookstores and whiling away the hours absorbed in a good story.
This is my first winter as a bookstore owner, and I've been excited and, naturally, nervous.
I had no idea what to expect last December, and the events that played out that month taught me in some very big ways to let go and know that unexpected things will always happen.
So settle in with a cup of tea and let me tell you about our winter adventures thus far.
It begins with a few projects I've wanted to do for a while.
I am proud to say that we finally dedicated a whole two bookcases to used books.
