📋 Summary

The Tragic Case of Rachel Hansen

On June 4, 2022, 19-year-old Rachel Hansen was shot in her apartment in Gilbert, Arizona. Despite calling 911 and being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries after surgery. The investigation into her death has been marked by frustration, heavy redactions in police files, and a lack of clear suspects, leaving her family, particularly her mother Kim Hansen, deeply disillusioned with the criminal justice system.

A Pattern of Intrusion

The night before the fatal shooting, Rachel had been awakened by an intruder standing over her bed. The person fled without a word, and Rachel, believing it might be a misunderstanding related to the apartment's previous subletter, did not report the incident to the police. Notably, the intruder left behind a "jar of pickles" on the kitchen counter. This seemingly benign detail, which the police reportedly claimed never to have seen, highlights the disconnect between the family's experience and the official police record.

Investigative Theories

Due to the lack of progress by the Gilbert Police Department, private investigator Justin Yentes and the Crime Junkie team have explored three primary theories regarding Rachel's murder:

1. The Subletter Theory

Rachel had been subletting her apartment "off the books" to a woman named America for six months prior to the incident. Neighbors had reported suspicious activity, including drug sales and loud arguments, at the unit. This theory posits that the shooter intended to target America, not knowing that Rachel had moved back in just two days prior.

2. The Horse Ranch Theory

Rachel had previously worked at a horse ranch in Queen Creek, where she faced professional conflicts and a mental health crisis that led to a brief hospitalization. While this theory gained significant traction online, it remains the least likely, as the ranch owners had alibis and were the ones who actually called for help during Rachel's mental health emergency.

3. The 'Scary Gary' Theory

This theory centers on Gary Bailey, the father of Rachel's fiancé, Jomet. The relationship between Rachel and Gary was fraught with conflict, including a documented incident where Gary backed his car into Rachel's vehicle. Gary, referred to as "Scary Gary" by church members, reportedly acted erratically and made threats. On the night of the murder, Jomet abruptly left Rachel’s apartment after receiving a call from his father, who later claimed at church that he had called his son home because the "Holy Spirit told me so." Despite these red flags and reports of Gary discussing hitmen, he was never formally brought in for questioning.

A Call for Justice

Nearly four years later, the case remains inactive. The police file, spanning 338 pages, is described as containing "a whole lot of nothing" due to extensive redactions. Kim Hansen continues to fight for her daughter's memory through the "Rachel's Rescue" organization. The family and investigators urge anyone with information to contact the Gilbert Police Department, Silent Witness, or private investigator Justin Yentes, as a $20,000 reward remains posted for information leading to the resolution of this case.
