📋 Summary

The Storyteller's Dilemma

In the whimsical forest of Little Stories for Tiny People, the protagonist, Mr. Beetle—a "legendary bootmaker turned a late-in-life storyteller"—finds his weekly storytime sessions increasingly chaotic. His audience of young bugs has become unruly, bringing "clickety little toys," "pinwheels," and "obnoxious hats" that disrupt his narrative flow. To manage this, Mr. Beetle establishes a "confiscation closet" to house the items he deems detrimental to the tranquility of his craft, though he admits he may have gone "slightly overboard" at times, such as when he plucked spectacles off a young bug's face.

The Quest for Perfection

Beyond the unruly audience, Mr. Beetle faces a technical crisis. His loyal assistant, Gwen, has been with him since the beginning, but the equipment they rely on has "gone well slightly haywire." The music player, once a source of atmosphere, has developed crossed wires, causing it to play the wrong songs or inject jarring sound effects at emotional peaks. Determined to provide the best experience for Gwen’s upcoming birthday, Mr. Beetle travels to a music shop to purchase a "truly magnificent music player." He meticulously plans for it to arrive in exactly three weeks, aligning perfectly with Gwen's birthday celebration.

The Obstacle of the 26th Branch

Just as his plans seem to be falling into place, a ferocious storm hits the forest, leaving the 26th branch dangling precariously above the 25th branch, where Mr. Beetle hosts his storytime. A bureaucratic bug from the "branch bureau" enforces a closure, citing that "policy's policy." The prospect of the closure lasting "three full weeks and two days" threatens both his storytime and the delivery of the gift for Gwen. Mr. Beetle is "positively flummoxed" by the situation, fearing that the branch will not be cleared in time for his surprise.

The Risky Solution: "Cats!"

Frustrated by the lack of progress and the potential for a ruined birthday, Mr. Beetle recalls a conversation about how to force the branch to fall. When a bug jokingly suggests "cats," Mr. Beetle views it as a viable, albeit dangerous, strategy. He devises a scheme to lure cats to the 26th branch by posting a fake advertisement about a "Lost Mouse" named Mr. Whiskers. Donning a "mouse costume" he had previously confiscated, he ventures out at midnight, shouting "For Gwen!" as he attempts to bait the cats into knocking the branch loose.

A Resonant Conclusion

The plan works, though with more terror than anticipated. The cats chase Mr. Beetle, but their combined weight and movement eventually cause the 26th branch to crash to the forest floor with a "tremendous force." With the path cleared, the branch bureau removes the blockade just in time. The new music player arrives exactly as planned, serving as a heartfelt birthday gift for Gwen. The story concludes with a successful storytime, proving that Mr. Beetle’s dedication to his craft and his friendship with Gwen—despite his occasional "harumphs" and eccentric methods—remains the heart of his forest world.

Welcome to Little Stories for Tiny People.
The other day I was touring a lollipop factory when I ran into an old friend of mine I used to work with at a weave-your-own-shoelaces shop.
It's not there anymore.
I guess no one wants to put in the time and effort to weave their own shoelaces these days.
Anyway, my friend was filling me in on all the interesting things he'd done since the when I noticed a beetle on his jacket.
