📋 Summary

The Rise of Mohammed bin Salman: A New Era for Saudi Arabia

The Changing Succession of the House of Saud

For decades, the Saudi royal family operated under a unique "horizontal" model of succession. Unlike Western monarchies that follow a vertical path from father to son, the crown in Saudi Arabia passed from brother to brother among the sons of the founder, Ibn Saud. This system was designed to maintain consensus and peace within a massive family, which is estimated to include between 5,000 and 15,000 princes and princesses. However, as the founding generation aged, the House of Saud evolved into a "dense, thick forest" of potential successors, creating a "ticking time bomb" regarding how future power would be consolidated.

The Emergence of MBS

Mohammed bin Salman, commonly known as MBS, was not initially a primary candidate for the throne. Born in 1985 as the sixth son of Salman bin Abdulaziz, he grew up relatively grounded compared to his royal cousins. While he initially displayed little interest in politics, he eventually cultivated a reputation as a focused, determined individual who "got things done." By working as an advisor, he gained deep insights into the "tribal networks, business networks, and security networks" that govern the absolute monarchy of Saudi Arabia.

Consolidating Absolute Power

In 2015, when his father became King, MBS was appointed Minister of Defence and Chief of the Royal Court, effectively becoming the "king's official gatekeeper." He quickly shattered the traditional horizontal succession model by sidelining his cousin, Mohammed bin Nayef (MBN), to become the Crown Prince. This transition was marked by a "quiet behind the scenes coup" that signaled the end of the consensus era.

Following his elevation, MBS launched an aggressive anti-corruption campaign in 2017. He turned the Ritz-Carlton Hotel into a "gilded prison," detaining hundreds of the kingdom's wealthiest and most influential figures. While officially framed as an effort to "clean up the system," it was widely viewed as a move to neutralize any potential rivals, allowing MBS to emerge as the "undisputed centre of authority."

Vision 2030 and Economic Modernization

Recognizing the kingdom's vulnerability to volatile oil prices, MBS introduced "Vision 2030." His goal was to move the country away from its reliance on oil and rebrand Saudi Arabia as a hub for innovation. By investing billions into global technology companies and fostering relationships with international leaders, he positioned himself as a "moderniser" and a champion of the country's youth, who make up roughly half of the population.

A Polarizing Legacy

Despite his popular social reforms—such as allowing women to drive and reopening cinemas—MBS remains a figure of intense controversy. His rule has been marked by the "silencing of critics" and the imprisonment of activists. The most significant international backlash followed the "blood-curdling murder" of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Although the Saudi government denied his involvement, the event cast a shadow over his reputation. Nevertheless, due to the kingdom's strategic importance and immense wealth, global leaders and investors eventually returned to the table.

Today, MBS acts as the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia. Whether he is viewed as a "visionary moderniser" or a "ruthless authoritarian," he has undeniably reshaped the Saudi landscape, setting the stage for what looks to be a long and transformative reign.
