Reclaiming Presence: A Journey Beyond the Screen

In this deeply personal and reflective podcast episode, Nabila explores the growing tension between our digital habits and the need for authentic, grounded living. As someone whose professional life is tethered to a computer screen, she candidly discusses the "weird insecure, depressive slump" that arises from excessive internet consumption and the conscious effort required to "rip myself out of my everyday tasks and internet time" to re-engage with the physical world.

The Digital Trap and the "Failure Behavior"

Nabila identifies a universal modern struggle: the immediate impulse to reach for our phones upon waking. She notes that this behavior has become so ingrained that the device feels like a "body part." Reflecting on her own morning routine, she labels this habitual scrolling as "failure behavior," acknowledging that while it provides a quick distraction from a "racing mind," it ultimately prevents her from feeling like herself. She emphasizes that this is a collective struggle, not limited to a single generation, as we constantly seek entertainment and information to silence our internal states.

Practical Strategies for Habit Formation

To bridge the gap between intention and action, Nabila turns to the principles found in Atomic Habits. She advocates for making desired behaviors "easy" rather than overcomplicating them. Her approach involves breaking tasks down into tiny, manageable steps. For instance, to establish a journaling practice, she suggests simply placing a pen and journal under her pillow. This lowers the barrier to entry, allowing her to "get that stuff out" of her head without the pressure of a perfect morning routine. She wisely notes, "We can do hard things, but we don't really like doing it," highlighting the importance of lowering friction to build consistency.

Transmuting Feelings into Action

Beyond simple habit tracking, the podcast touches on the delicate balance between discipline and self-compassion. Nabila questions how we can honor our feelings while still striving for our goals: "How can we listen to what we are feeling and learn to sort of transmute that... or use it for insight and information as to how to work with ourselves instead of against ourselves?" She argues that while discipline is essential to "make the impossible possible," it must be tempered with an understanding of our emotional needs. She frames life as a "stage" and encourages listeners to stop "consuming" and start living, suggesting that we should "lift the veil off" and pursue actions that align with our true selves rather than waiting for the perfect conditions.

Cultivating Joy in the Mundane

Throughout the episode, Nabila documents moments of connection—whether it’s buying flowers at Trader Joe’s, sharing breakfast tacos with her friend Chloe, or even the visceral experience of eating a sour candy to understand the "journey" of overcoming discomfort to reach sweetness. These vignettes serve as a testament to her mission of "Vlogging Off," proving that richness is found in the "real world." By choosing to document these small, human moments, she invites her audience to find beauty in the everyday, reminding us that life is "not a dress rehearsal" and that we possess the agency to shift our focus from the digital void to the vibrant, tangible experiences right in front of us.

📖 Transcript

So my job is on the computer.
I can tend to look at a screen all day, and my relationship with that and the internet has made me not feel so great recently.
And I've noticed, when I'm able to be aware of that, take a step back and do something that makes me feel like myself, that grounds me back in the real world again.
It's really rewarding and it's refreshing, and it's hard for me sometimes to get myself to that point.
I've been filming little moments throughout the past few months when i've been sort of in this weird insecure, depressive slump and just like how i sort of rip myself out of my everyday tasks and internet time to go live life even when i don't feel like it.
I wanted to welcome you guys into some of those moments, some of the things that i do when i am forcing myself to log.
