A Morning Hike in Santiago: Reflections on Nature, Fitness, and Language Goals

In this episode of English Sponge, host Sam takes viewers on a morning hiking vlog in Santiago, Chile. The journey serves as both a physical challenge and a platform for reflecting on the realities of language learning and personal growth.

The Unexpected Greenery of Santiago

Sam begins his journey by walking through the streets of Santiago, noting that the city is surprisingly "green" and full of parks. Contrary to his initial expectations of a concrete-heavy urban landscape similar to central Buenos Aires, Sam finds himself surrounded by nature. As he progresses from the streets onto a trail, he points out the local flora, specifically mentioning the abundance of cacti—noting that the plural of cactus is indeed "cacti." This connection to nature is a highlight for Sam, who describes himself as someone who "really loves mountains."

The Physical Challenge: Pushing Boundaries

As the trail grows steeper, Sam admits to being "out of shape." His heavy breathing serves as a candid reminder that fitness is a journey. He encounters "handrails" along the path, which are provided for those who need extra assistance on the incline. Despite the difficulty, Sam emphasizes the philosophy of English Sponge: "We don't do that [give up/slow down]. Here at English Sponge, we always push ourselves to be better." This struggle is framed as a necessary step toward future improvement.

Language Learning: The Reality of Progress

Midway through the hike, Sam pivots to a reflective discussion on language learning. He acknowledges that, like many of his students, he has fallen behind his goals. He reveals that his personal goal is to hit 400 hours of "comprehensible input" in Chinese by the end of the year. However, he admits, "I'm really far behind where I expected to be."

Sam uses his own situation to offer encouragement to his audience:

  • It’s okay to take a break: Life can get "crazy," and sometimes mental space is occupied by major life transitions, such as his own move to Santiago.
  • The importance of restarting: The key is to get "back on the bike" or "back behind the wheel."
  • Motivation: He encourages viewers to view his struggle up the mountain as a metaphor for language practice: "If I can force myself up this hill at eight in the morning, you can do your language learning practice."

Reaching the Peak: Tranquility and Reflection

After 25 minutes of intense walking, Sam reaches the summit, where he finds a statue of the Virgin Mary. He describes the area as a place of "peace" and "tranquility." Due to signs requesting silence, he reflects quietly on the environment, which includes a church with beautiful "stone carvings" and "holy paintings."

Concluding the vlog, Sam reinforces the importance of consistent effort. He reminds viewers that whether it is hiking or learning a new language, the journey is often difficult, but the persistence to keep moving forward is what ultimately leads to reaching the "peak."
