📋 Summary

The Quest and Character of Sir Pelleus

The story of Sir Pelleus, widely known as the "Gentle Knight," begins with a trivial dispute over beauty. When Parsonette, a messenger from the Lady Attard, presents a portrait of her mistress to Queen Guinevere, Sir Pelleus gallantly defends the Queen’s superior beauty. This sparks a quest to the court of the Lady Attard, where Pelleus seeks to validate his claim through combat against her champion, Sir Engamore of Malverot.

The Test of the Lady of the Lake

En route to his destination, Pelleus encounters an old woman struggling by a "deep and violent stream." Despite Parsonette’s protests that Pelleus is too important for such menial tasks, the knight insists on helping, reminding her that "a true knight helped anyone in need." His compassion is rewarded when the old woman reveals herself to be Nimue, the "chief lady of the lake." She gifts him a magical necklace, a "collar of opal stones and emeralds," which possesses the power to make the wearer beloved by all who look upon him.

The Red Knight and the Redemption of Sir Adresack

Continuing his journey, Pelleus encounters a young woman mourning her husband, Sir Brandemere, who was captured by a "terrible knight" dressed in red. Upon reaching the bridge, Pelleus faces the Red Knight, Sir Adresack. Lacking his own armor, Pelleus uses his immense strength to throw a massive stone, defeating Adresack and forcing his surrender. Discovering that Adresack had imprisoned twenty-one captives—including knights from King Arthur's court—Pelleus displays his mercy. Instead of execution, he demands that Adresack "free all the prisoners" and seek forgiveness at Camelot. Pelleus’s kindness, amplified by the magic of his collar, cements his reputation as a hero among the freed victims.

The Tragic Allure of Lady Attard

Upon arriving at the land of the Lady Attard, Pelleus dons the armor captured from Adresack and easily defeats Sir Engamore in a "friendly battle." However, the victory turns complex when Pelleus meets the Lady Attard. Overwhelmed by her beauty and the influence of the magical collar, Pelleus falls deeply in love, a sentiment reciprocated by the Lady.

Their romance takes a dark turn when the Lady Attard requests the magical collar. Once Pelleus removes it, the enchantment breaks, and the Lady’s affection shifts to cold rage. She feels humiliated for having been charmed by Pelleus and sets out to ruin him. Through a "sleeping potion," she drugs Pelleus and subjects him to public mockery, stripping him of his armor and dignity.

The Persistence of Obsession

Despite the betrayal, Pelleus remains steadfast in his love, refusing to let his friends seek vengeance. He declares, "I would defend her honor to the death," and vows to win a visit with her. He eventually stages a surrender to be dragged back to her castle, hoping to see her again. However, the Lady Attard remains cruel, ordering him to be tied to his horse and paraded in shame. Even when his friends, Sir Brandelise and Sir Mador de la Porte, appeal to the honor of King Arthur and the Round Table, the power of the collar—now worn by the Lady Attard—has left Pelleus so enthralled that he ignores his duty, exclaiming, "I do not care about them either."
