📋 Summary

The Disguised King: Arthur’s Secret Defense of Guinevere

The Call for Help and the Royal Disguise

The narrative begins with a pressing crisis in the west country. A messenger arrives at King Arthur’s court, reporting that King Ryans of North Wales is threatening war and demanding both land and the hand of Lady Guinevere for the cruel Duke Mordant of North Umber. Driven by his memory of Guinevere as an "angel" who aided him when he was a "wounded" man in the forest, Arthur resolves to intervene. Seeking to observe the situation and the lady herself without the constraints of his royal status, he enlists Merlin’s magical aid. Merlin provides a "cap" that transforms the King into a "simple country boy," allowing him to infiltrate the castle as a gardener.

The Unmasking of the Gardener

Life in the garden becomes a test of Arthur’s deception. While tending to the roses, Arthur is spotted by Melusine of the White Hand, an attendant who glimpses a "handsome knight wearing a royal golden collar" at the fountain. Despite Arthur’s attempts to dismiss these sightings as dreams, Guinevere eventually witnesses the truth herself. The tension culminates when Guinevere, suspecting the gardener’s true identity, commands him to bring her roses. When Arthur refuses to remove his cap, citing an "ugly spot on my head," Guinevere takes matters into her own hands and snatches the cap away, "revealing him in all of his golden glory." Although Guinevere recognizes him as the knight she once helped, her pride leads her to reprimand him coldly, ordering him back to his "roses" while swearing to protect his secret.

The Challenge of Duke Mordant

The diplomatic crisis escalates as King Ryans and Duke Mordant arrive at the castle gates, issuing a five-day ultimatum for Guinevere’s marriage. Bored by the wait, the arrogant Duke Mordant begins to parade before the castle, shouting for a challenger. Because he is "one of the most famous knights of his day," the court of King Leodogrance remains paralyzed by fear, with no one daring to step forward against the violent Duke.

The Knight in White

Seizing the opportunity to defend his lady, Arthur secures a "noble white warhorse" and a suit of "white Spanish satin and armor" from a merchant. Before entering the fray, he approaches Guinevere, who grants him a "necklace of pearls" as a token of favor. The transformation is complete; unrecognized by the enemy, Arthur presents himself as a mysterious champion. The confrontation is swift: Arthur’s "skillful spear" strikes Mordant’s shield with such force that the Duke is thrown from his saddle. The brash Duke, bewildered by his defeat, is left "out of breath" and silenced by the very gardener he had so carelessly dismissed, proving the triumph of Arthur’s hidden nobility over Mordant’s hollow pride.
