📋 Summary

The Voyage to Brobdingnag: An Encounter with Giants

The Journey and the Great Storm

The narrative begins with the protagonist, driven by a "restless life" and "nature and fortune," embarking on a new maritime venture aboard the Adventure. Setting sail on the 20th of June, 1702, the journey takes a turn for the worse near the Maluka Islands. A relentless "great storm" persists for 20 days, pushing the ship 500 leagues off course. This meteorological upheaval serves as the catalyst for the protagonist’s displacement, leading the crew to discover an unknown "great land mass" while searching for water.

The Discovery of the Titans

Upon landing, the protagonist ventures inland, only to witness a scene of terrifying proportions. He observes a "huge creature" walking into the sea with strides so vast that the water barely reaches his knees. The landscape itself is surreal; the grass is "more than twenty feet high," and the corn towers "at least forty feet" above him. The protagonist’s vulnerability is highlighted by his inability to navigate the environment—even a simple set of steps is "six feet high," rendering them impassable obstacles. When he encounters the inhabitants, he describes their voices as "so loud and booming" that he initially mistakes the sound for "thunder."

Survival Amidst the Reapers

As the protagonist hides in the cornfield, he faces the constant threat of being "squashed to death" by the reapers. The stalks of corn, while providing cover, are "stiff and sharp," cutting through his clothes and flesh. The juxtaposition of his former experience in Lilliput—where he was a giant—is stark; he reflects on the irony, noting, "How small one Lilliputian would appear among these creatures!" His eventual capture by a "head farmer" is a moment of intense terror, as he is picked up between a "forefinger and his thumb," fearing at every moment that he might be dropped.

Integration into the Household

Despite the language barrier—where the farmer’s attempt to listen to him is "all in vain"—the protagonist is carried home to the farmer’s family. The domestic life of these giants is scaled to terrifying dimensions: a meat dish "four feet by twenty feet" and a table standing "thirty feet from the ground." The protagonist’s status shifts from a wild discovery to a curiosity under the protection of the farmer’s wife, who eventually grows "extremely caring" toward him.

The Battle with the Vermin

Living in a room "300 feet wide and over 200 feet high," the protagonist is not safe from the local wildlife. The arrival of "two large rats"—each the "size of a large dog"—forces him into a desperate fight for survival. Utilizing his "long knife," he manages to kill one, while the other flees. The aftermath of this skirmish, where the maid removes the carcass with "a pair of tongs," underscores the protagonist's profound insignificance in this world. He remains a fragile entity, both in his physical scale and his precarious position within this monumental household.
