📋 Summary

The Perilous Journey and Triumph of Hansel and Gretel

Abandonment and the Breadcrumb Trail

The story begins with a desperate woodcutter and his cruel wife, who decide to abandon their children, Hansel and Gretel, in the forest due to extreme poverty. Despite the woodcutter's reluctance, he succumbs to his wife’s manipulation, stating, "I will never forgive myself." Hansel, having overheard the plan, prepares a clever escape strategy by leaving a "tiny trail of breadcrumbs" as they are led deep into the woods. However, his plan is thwarted when the "birds must have eaten the breadcrumbs," leaving the children lost and wandering for three days until they reach a point of total exhaustion.

The Temptation of the Witch's House

Driven by hunger, the children discover a miraculous cottage with "walls made of bread," a "roof made of cake," and "windows made of sparkling sugar." Their joy is short-lived, as the homeowner—a "wicked witch"—reveals her true intentions. She captures Hansel, locking him in a shed to fatten him up, and forces Gretel into servitude. The witch’s cruelty is evident in her demand: "He needs to fatten up so I can eat him."

The Battle of Wits and Survival

To survive, Hansel employs a clever ruse. When the nearly blind witch demands he "stick out your finger" to check his weight, he offers an "old bone" instead. Frustrated by his lack of progress, the witch decides to cook him anyway. In a climactic moment of bravery, Gretel tricks the witch into checking the oven: "Would you please show me?" When the witch crawls inside, Gretel "slammed the oven door, shut it and locked it," effectively ending the witch's reign of terror.

Return and Redemption

After securing their freedom, the children scavenge the witch's house, stuffing their pockets with "gold, pearls, and jewelry." They return home to find their father, who is overwhelmed with joy. They learn that the stepmother has passed away, leaving the father and children to reconcile. With the newfound riches, the family is "no longer be poor or hungry," and they finally find the peace and stability they were denied at the start of their journey.
