📋 Summary

Embracing the Basics: A Fresh Perspective

In this episode, I share a list of things I have been genuinely enjoying recently. Admittingly, this is my most "basic" list to date—a collection of popular trends and activities that I often shy away from due to my own psychological aversion to things deemed universally popular. However, I’ve realized that avoiding trends is a personal flaw; there is often a reason why people gravitate toward certain things. From travel habits to daily rituals, here is my current list of favorites.

The Joy of the Road Trip

I used to despise road trips, but my perspective has shifted—partly due to a new-found fear of flying and partly because I’ve matured. I recently completed several long drives, including trips from LA to San Francisco and Utah. I’ve found that road trips offer a unique sense of control and flexibility that flying lacks. Being on the ground allows for spontaneous stops at local farms or diners. Furthermore, the car environment fosters better conversations, whether with a companion or over the phone, which is nearly impossible in the noisy cabin of a plane.

Glamping and the Great Outdoors

While I am not quite ready for the raw challenge of traditional camping, "glamping" has become a favorite way to experience nature without sacrificing comfort. Staying at places like Under Canvas provides the adventurous feel of a tent with the added security of plumbing and structured facilities. This newfound love for the outdoors has also led me to hiking. I recently completed a six-mile hike in Zion National Park; despite being exhausting, it is a phenomenal form of exercise that allows for mindfulness and connection with nature.

Personal Rituals: Nail Polish and Reading

For years, I searched for a signature nail color, cycling through pastels and nudes. I have finally settled on dark red. Not only is it a classic, but as the "red nail theory" suggests, it feels incredibly flattering and acts as a neutral that complements every outfit. Additionally, I’ve started reading while eating lunch. This habit has been life-changing; it forces me to slow down my eating, which is better for my digestion, and it helps me avoid the trap of mindlessly watching YouTube videos during my breaks.

Finding Calm in Flea Markets and Bird Watching

I have returned to the "flea market grind," focusing on buying timeless, pre-loved items rather than chasing trends. Beyond shopping, I have unexpectedly taken up bird watching. It started as a way to cope with difficult times while traveling, and now, sitting on a beach or in a park to watch birds has become a grounding, meditative practice. It allows me to leave my phone behind and simply exist in the moment.

Culinary Staples and Hair Care

In the kitchen, I am currently obsessed with two things: Buffalo cauliflower—the perfect, spicy, vegetarian appetizer—and a specific green tahini sauce recipe I discovered from chef Rick Martinez. I also love adding a Tajín rim to tequila sodas for a chili-tart flavor profile. On the hair front, I’ve embraced the "clean girl bun." While I dislike the toxic aesthetic surrounding the trend, the hairstyle itself is incredibly practical for managing oily hair between washes, especially when paired with a good pomade stick and flexible hairspray.

Entertainment and Intellectual Stimulation

Finally, I’ve been re-exploring the music I grew up with, such as The Beatles, and discovering new depths in albums I previously took for granted. For television, I cannot recommend How To With John Wilson enough—it is my ultimate comfort show. I also found the documentary Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God to be a deeply fascinating, albeit dark, watch. Lastly, I am back in my "board game era," specifically with Ticket to Ride. It is a game that requires deep strategy and focus, which helps me step away from the internet and manage my anxiety.
