Shift work presents a unique challenge because the autonomic nervous system is "asymmetrically wired": it is easier to stay awake longer than it is to fall asleep on demand. To mitigate the health risks of shift work, consistency is paramount—ideally maintaining the same schedule for at least 14 days, including weekends. For those struggling to maintain a schedule, Dr. Huberman advocates for Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) protocols to maintain autonomic regulation without the need for medication.
