📋 Summary

The Tragedy of Corpsewood Manor

In this episode of Morbid, hosts Alayna and Ash delve into the horrific and senseless 1982 murders at "Corpsewood Manor," a case that highlights the intersection of societal prejudice, the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s, and the vulnerability of those living outside traditional norms.

The Victims: Dr. Charles Scudder and Joseph Odom

Dr. Charles Scudder, a brilliant pharmacology professor at Loyola University in Chicago, and his partner, Joseph "Joey" Odom, sought to escape the "sensory overload of city life." Seeking a life of self-sufficiency and freedom, they moved to 40 acres of isolated woodland in northern Georgia. They built their "kingdom," a beautiful brick mansion they dubbed Corpsewood Manor, by hand.

Scudder was an eccentric intellectual who enjoyed the arts, playing the harp, and painting. Odom, despite limited formal education, was a skilled cook and homemaker. The two lived an "open" and inseparable life. Their interest in the Church of Satan—which the hosts clarify is an atheistic organization focused on self-empowerment rather than devil worship—made them targets of local suspicion in the conservative, rural South of the early 1980s.

The Perpetrators and the Crime

The tragedy began when Scudder and Odom befriended a 17-year-old local hunter named Kenneth "Avery" Brock. Avery, along with his roommate Samuel "Tony" West, eventually concocted a baseless plan to rob the couple, falsely assuming they were hiding a massive fortune.

On December 12, 1982, Avery and Tony, accompanied by two teenagers who were unaware of the murderous intent, arrived at the manor. After a night of huffing "Toodaloo" (a mixture of paint thinner, alcohol, and glue), the situation escalated. Avery and Tony brutally murdered Odom and the couple's two beloved bullmastiff dogs, Beelzebub and Arsonath. They then forced Scudder into his own home, demanding money that did not exist. In a final, heartbreaking moment, Scudder, facing his killers, reportedly said, "I asked for this," before being shot multiple times.

The Aftermath and Societal Stigma

The killers escaped with only a handful of change, a silver candelabra, and a gold-plated dagger. They later committed another senseless murder of a lieutenant at a rest stop while attempting to steal another vehicle.

Following the murders, the case became a flashpoint for the "Satanic Panic." Media and local rumors painted the victims as "homosexual devil worshippers" who supposedly drugged their guests with LSD, despite evidence showing the LSD found in the home was securely stored in vials and never used on anyone. The victims were effectively put on trial by the public, their lifestyle used to justify their deaths.

A Chilling Premonition

A haunting detail of the case involves a self-portrait Scudder painted months before his death. In the painting, Scudder depicted himself gagged and suffering from five bullet wounds to the head—the exact manner in which he was killed.

Ultimately, justice was served in the legal sense: Avery and Tony were sentenced to life in prison. However, the legacy of Corpsewood Manor remains a sobering reminder of how prejudice and ignorance can turn a dream of peaceful isolation into a site of unimaginable horror. The site of the manor itself, now in ruins, remains a place where, as legend suggests, the echoes of the past—and perhaps the sound of Scudder’s harp—still linger.
