📋 Summary

Redefining the Polyglot Mindset

In this episode, Connor reflects on his personal experience with language learning, clarifying that despite his passion for the topic, he does not consider himself a "polyglot." He defines a polyglot as someone who achieves a B2 (upper-intermediate) level in at least five languages. Connor admits that his previous approach was "casual" and "inconsistent," characterized by "alternating" between languages rather than committing to one. This lack of focus has hindered his ability to reach advanced proficiency in languages beyond English and Spanish. However, he is now "shifting his mindset" to prioritize long-term depth over casual exploration.

Current Language Proficiency and Future Goals

Spanish: The Established Standard

Spanish is the only foreign language Connor speaks at a high level, which he estimates to be around C1. Having lived in Mexico for six years and maintaining a relationship where he speaks primarily in Spanish, he is highly comfortable in daily life. However, he notes that he lacks "technical car vocabulary" or experience with complex professional issues, representing the only areas where he sees "room for improvement."

Portuguese: The Lingering Skill

Connor reached his peak in Portuguese around 2017-2018 when it was essential for his job teaching Brazilian students. He attained a "high B1 level," allowing him to even create YouTube content. Although he has "lost a ton of vocabulary" due to inactivity, he notes that because he reached an intermediate level, he could easily "pick it back up" with a few months of practice, unlike a beginner who would have to start from scratch.

French: The Current Priority

French is currently Connor's primary focus. Having studied it "on and off" for years, he can "understand the vast majority" of what he hears but has done "very little speaking practice." His concrete goal is to reach a B2 level by the end of the year, marking a departure from his past habit of "dabbling" in multiple languages simultaneously.

Greek: The Passion Project

Greek holds a special place as Connor’s "favorite language" to study, describing the process as "pure pleasure." He previously reached an A2 level but has since forgotten most of it. His plan is to dedicate himself to Greek for a "two-year journey" after achieving his B2 goal in French, aiming to reach a level where he can form "deep connections" with native speakers.

Reflections on Past Experiments

Connor also touches upon his brief forays into Italian and Indonesian. He views his 100-day Italian challenge as a valuable lesson in "motivation and discipline," though he currently lacks the time to pursue it further. His experience with Indonesian was particularly unique, as it was his first attempt at a language with "zero relation to English," providing a stark contrast to his other studies.

Ultimately, Connor emphasizes that his motivation for learning is not to collect languages, but to replicate the "rewarding" experience he has in Spanish—the ability to engage in deep, meaningful communication. By moving away from his history of being "inconsistent" and embracing a more disciplined, sequential approach, he hopes to expand his ability to connect with others across cultures.
