Reflecting on Abandoned Aspirations: A Journey Through Failed Dreams

In this episode of the Listening Time podcast, host Connor takes a reflective and lighthearted look at his past, exploring various "distant goals" and "failed dreams" that he once harbored but eventually abandoned. By sharing these personal anecdotes, he aims to provide both entertainment and English listening practice, highlighting the reality that not all youthful ambitions are meant to come to fruition.

The Filmmaking Ambition

One of Connor’s most significant early goals was to become a film director. During his senior year of high school, he was deeply inspired by classic cinema, focusing on "story, the cinematography, and the acting." He enrolled in a film school located on the Universal Studios campus, which offered practical experience from the "first week on." Despite gaining valuable hands-on skills in roles ranging from lighting to sound, he quickly realized he "hated the film industry" and its culture. After completing only six months of a one-year program, he decided to "drop out," effectively ending his pursuit of a career in movies.

The Athletic Aspirations

Connor admits that his desire to become a professional athlete was perhaps his most "ridiculous" dream. As a child, he was a "decent athlete" but lacked the elite talent required for professional sports. He highlights three specific areas of failure:

  • Basketball: He initially had an advantage due to his height, but once his peers caught up to him, he realized he wasn't "anywhere near as good as I needed to be."
  • Football: He harbored a secret dream of playing professionally despite never having played on an organized team.
  • Baseball: He struggled with hitting but spent significant time practicing to be a pitcher, even having a custom net built in his yard, before eventually losing interest.
  • Tennis: While he notes this was his best sport and he might have been able to play in college, he ultimately stopped early to pursue other interests.

Creative Writing and Literary Goals

Although Connor has published a book of short stories for language learners, his deeper, failed dream was to become an author of "literary fiction"—novels filled with "symbolism" and deep meaning. He confesses that he could never get past writing about one-quarter of a novel, leading him to the conclusion that he simply "doesn't have it in me" to finish a full-length book. He remains passionate about writing, but has accepted that his talents lie in other forms rather than the traditional novel.

The Language School Vision

Connor once envisioned opening a physical language school, a place he romanticized as a "language learners' paradise." While he maintains a "soft spot" for these institutions—partly because he met his wife at one—he realized that running a school might conflict with his personal philosophy on language acquisition. He worried about the limitations of traditional classroom settings, such as overcrowding and reduced speaking time for students. Interestingly, this ambition served as a bridge, leading him to his current career in online language education.

A Final Bonus Dream: The Breakfast Restaurant

Closing on a lighter note, Connor mentions a "bonus dream" that hasn't officially failed yet: opening a breakfast restaurant. Despite having no cooking experience, he believes his refined "taste in breakfast" and ability to curate a unique environment could lead to success. While he estimates only a "1% chance" of this happening, it remains a fun, distant aspiration he occasionally discusses with his wife.

Through these stories, Connor illustrates that abandoning a dream is not necessarily a failure; often, these paths serve as stepping stones that lead us to our true purpose and current successes.
