📋 Summary

The Wisdom of the Small: Lessons from The Tug of War

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear presents a classic folktale titled "The Tug of War." This story, rooted in traditions from East Africa, Brazil, and the southern United States, serves as a poignant reminder that physical size does not dictate true strength or wisdom. The narrative centers on two arrogant, "boastful" beasts—Elephant and Hippopotamus—and their eventual humbling by a clever, smaller creature.

The Arrogance of Size

At the beginning of the story, the forest and the river are dominated by two bullies. Elephant, who considers himself the "king of the forest," boasts of his "massive gray feet" and claims that smaller creatures "pale in comparison" to him. Similarly, Hippopotamus, the self-proclaimed "queen of the river," dismisses the smaller animals as "teeny weeny river critters" who are "no match" for her. These two characters use their stature to intimidate others, constantly laughing at the smaller animals who try to advocate for kindness.

Turtle’s Clever Strategy

Turtle, tired of the bullying, decides to use her "smarts" to challenge the status quo. She crafts a "long, strong rope" from vines and approaches each giant separately. She challenges both Elephant and Hippo to a tug-of-war, telling them, "I bet if we had a tug-of-war, I would win." Both giants, blinded by their own pride, mock the idea, with Elephant calling it "preposterous" and Hippo labeling it "ridiculous." Neither realizes that Turtle is not playing a fair game; she is setting them up to pull against each other.

The Great Struggle

Turtle hides in a thicket and signals the start of the contest with a whistle. The ensuing struggle is a testament to the giants' misplaced energy. As they pull with all their might, Elephant nearly yanks Hippo out of the "cool blue river," while Hippo nearly pulls Elephant out of the "thick green forest." As the day turns to night, the two giants become exhausted, yet their pride keeps them pulling. Turtle, observing from her hiding spot, laughs to herself, reiterating her earlier point: "Maybe I have strengths you cannot see."

A Lesson in Equality

Eventually, the two giants decide to investigate why the "shrimp" of a turtle is so strong, only to come face-to-face in the dark. Upon realizing they have been pulling against each other, the giants collapse in a heap. When they finally see Turtle, they are struck by the realization of her cleverness. The experience humbles them. From that day forward, they stop acting as tyrants and begin to see the other animals as their "equals."

Conclusion

The story concludes with a powerful moral: "Just because somebody's the biggest... Doesn't mean they're the strongest." Turtle’s victory demonstrates that intelligence and ingenuity often outweigh brute force. As Rebecca Shear notes, no matter how small we are, we can possess the strength and wisdom to change our circumstances and influence those around us for the better.
