📋 Summary

The Rice Cakes and the Oni: A Tale of Wit and Survival

Introduction

In this special Halloween episode of the Circle Round podcast, host Rebecca Shear shares a Japanese folktale titled "The Rice Cakes and the Oni." The story follows a mother and son, Mayumi and Haru, who find themselves in a precarious situation with legendary monsters after a simple mistake. Through humor and quick thinking, they manage to outsmart their captors and return home safely.

A Sticky Situation

Mayumi and Haru are famous in their seaside village for their "crispy, light and perfectly round" rice cakes. One evening, while trying to perfect a batch, Haru accidentally drops a rice cake that rolls down the mountain toward the sea. Despite his mother’s warning not to "tangle with the oni," Haru chases after it and inadvertently leads both himself and his mother into the clutches of the "three big monsters" known as the Oni, who possess "sharp eyes and large, pointy ears."

Captivity and the Magic Spoon

The Oni, impressed by the quality of the rice cakes, force the duo to stay in their cave to produce more. To facilitate this, the Oni provide a "magic spoon," which, when tapped against a pot, produces an endless supply of rice. For a time, Mayumi and Haru serve the monsters, waiting for an opportunity to escape while the Oni fall into deep, snoring slumbers after their feasts.

The Great Escape

Recognizing that the Oni "sink like rocks" if they enter the sea, Mayumi formulates a plan to use the large black cooking pot as a boat to traverse the bay. However, the plan hits a snag when the sensitive ears of the Oni detect Mayumi’s sigh of relief, waking them up. The Oni, having consumed massive amounts of water from the bay, begin to close in on the pair.

The Power of Humor

In a moment of desperation, Mayumi urges Haru to tell a joke, hoping to distract the monsters. Haru delivers a pun: "What is a whale's favorite game to play? Swallow the leader!" The joke proves effective, causing the monsters to laugh so violently that they expel all the water they had consumed. This restores the bay, allowing Mayumi and Haru to float away in their pot to safety.

Conclusion

Upon returning home, the pair discovers that the magic spoon was inadvertently kept in Mayumi’s pocket. The story concludes with them enjoying a feast, forever grateful for their ingenuity. As host Rebecca Shear notes, the tale serves as a reminder that humor can be a powerful tool, even when facing "big monsters." The episode concludes with a call to listeners to share their own jokes, encouraging a spirit of fun and creativity in the tradition of this lighthearted Halloween story.
