📋 Summary

The Months of the Year: A Lesson in Seasonal Harmony

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear shares a timeless folktale titled "The Months of the Year." Originating from Russian, Greek, and Czech traditions, this story explores the lives of two orphaned siblings, Anna and Otto, and the magical encounter that changes their perspective on the natural world.

The Devotion of a Sister

Anna and her younger brother Otto live on a farm following the death of their parents. Anna dedicates her life to caring for her brother, working tirelessly through the seasons—planting crops in the spring, harvesting in the summer and fall, and tending to the animals in the winter. Despite her efforts, Otto remains heartbroken. One winter morning, longing for the comfort of the past, Otto asks for "fairy bracelets"—the scallions their father used to put in their omelets. Despite it being January, Anna ventures into the freezing cold to find them for her brother.

A Magical Encounter on the Mountain

Anna’s journey leads her to a clearing on a "tall, tall mountain," where she discovers a massive bonfire surrounded by 12 women. These women are the personifications of the months of the year. Anna, "chilled to the bone," is welcomed by January, who sits upon a "throne made of stone." When Anna explains her plight, the months demonstrate a profound sense of connection to those who work hard. March, moved by Anna’s devotion to her family, takes the throne, causing the snow to melt and scallions to sprout instantly. Later, when Otto wishes for strawberries, June takes the throne, blessing Anna with "red, ripe" fruit. As the months note, "Whatever the month? Whatever the season, you belong to all of us months. And we belong to you."

The Folly of Greed

Conflict arises when a woman claiming to be the siblings' aunt arrives at the farm. Upon seeing the out-of-season produce, she grows envious and greedy. Unlike Anna, who only sought to bring happiness to her brother, the aunt travels to the mountain seeking power and wealth. She demands a "bounty" and a "cornucopia" of goods, hoping to sell them to "make a mint." Her arrogance and lack of respect for the natural order—demanding that summer provide for her while she ignores the winter—lead to her downfall. January, offended by the woman’s dismissive attitude toward the winter months, summons a "wild storm" that drives the woman away, never to return.

Conclusion: Harmony with the Seasons

The story concludes with a reflection on the "charmed" nature of the siblings' farm. By respecting the cycle of the seasons, Anna and Otto find their home to be milder and more peaceful than the surrounding lands. The tale serves as a powerful reminder that when we live in harmony with the natural world and prioritize love over greed, we find ourselves supported by the very rhythm of time. As the narrative suggests, the months offer their gifts to those who truly belong to them, turning the simple act of seasonal appreciation into a source of lifelong warmth and prosperity.
