📋 Summary

The Ultra Legend’s New Pursuit

Courtney Dauwalter, widely recognized as the "GOAT in ultra running," recently made headlines by stepping away from the trails to compete in the Twin Cities Marathon. Following an incredible 2023 season where she secured historic wins at Western States 100, Hard Rock 100, and UTMB, Dauwalter felt a new spark of curiosity. "I've always watched the marathon coverage and been intrigued by it," she shared, emphasizing that her transition to road racing was driven by a desire to "pull the threads of things that bring me joy" rather than a strategic shift in her professional career.

Revisiting the Roots: The Twin Cities Experience

Choosing the Twin Cities Marathon was a sentimental decision for Dauwalter, as it was the very first road marathon she ever completed in 2009. Reflecting on that time, she noted, "It was the first thing to push over the domino for me of running really, really far." Her performance was impressive, finishing with a time of 2:49:00. She described the race as a unique puzzle: "It feels like a new puzzle, but with a lot of the same pieces that I kind of am familiar with."

Training and Adaptation

Transitioning from 100-mile mountain efforts to road marathons required a significant change in training philosophy. Dauwalter, who usually trains at 10,000 feet with a focus on volume and mountain terrain, had to pivot to speed work. She candidly admitted to consulting friends for advice, asking, "What does four by one K mean?" Her training volume dropped as she focused on intensity and pace—a stark contrast to her typical approach of "leaving the door with a pack, a bunch of snacks... and just seeing what happens."

Navigating the Road Racing Community

One of the most humorous and relatable aspects of her transition was learning the mechanics of road racing, specifically aid stations. Dauwalter, accustomed to carrying her own supplies, initially struggled to grab water bottles on the fly. She recounted a moment during the race where she missed her bottle, laughing, "I had forgotten what my bottle looked like." Despite the learning curve, she expressed deep appreciation for the marathoning community, noting that while the ultra world is defined by the "experience" and "gnarly stories," the marathon world is more focused on the clock and the finish time.

Looking Ahead: The Road to CIM

Buoyed by the success of Twin Cities, Dauwalter has announced her next challenge: the California International Marathon (CIM) in December. She is eager to experience the "pack mentality" of a fast road field, something she missed at Twin Cities because the leaders started so quickly. "I want that like pack mentality... charging off of each other's energy," she said. When asked about her long-term potential and the possibility of chasing an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:37, she remains humble yet curious, stating, "I need to find out" what she is capable of.

A Philosophy of Joy

Throughout the conversation, Dauwalter maintained her signature positivity. Whether discussing her love for candy corn or her "why not?" approach to running, her focus remains on exploration and enjoyment. As she continues to bridge the gap between the trail and road worlds, she remains a refreshing voice in the running community, reminding us that whether you are on a mountain path or a city street, the fundamental drive remains the same: "Running is running is running."
