The Rise and Reign of Empress Dowager Cixi: Power Behind the Curtain

The Humble Beginnings of an Imperial Power

In 1852, the Forbidden City became the stage for a massive ritual: the selection of royal consorts for the young Emperor Xianfeng. Among the teenage girls arriving in "blue silk drapery" carts was a 16-year-old girl known as Cixi. Unlike the majority Han population, Cixi belonged to the Manchu ethnic minority, which afforded her a unique upbringing where she was "allowed some education" and held "more say in the family." Her intelligence and confidence were her primary assets as she navigated the competitive harem, eventually securing a foothold in the palace.

Navigating the Harem and Gaining Favor

Emperor Xianfeng was a ruler facing significant instability, characterized by "foreign invasions" and "peasants' uprisings." As an artist who "loved Chinese opera" and "painted quite beautifully," he was arguably ill-suited for the political crises of the Qing Dynasty. Cixi, displaying a shrewd understanding of his personality, leveraged her own talents to gain his favor. As Dr. Yingchen Peng notes, "Sushi was a very clever girl" who provided the Emperor with art, even having her paintings mounted by his eunuchs. Despite her efforts, she initially remained a "lowly concubine," while her contemporary, Se-an, ascended to the rank of Empress. However, the trajectory of Cixi’s life changed forever in 1856 when she gave birth to a son, Tongzhi, the Emperor’s only heir.

The Death of an Emperor and the Crisis of Succession

By 1860, the Qing Dynasty was in shambles following the British and French invasion and the burning of the Summer Palace. Emperor Xianfeng, nicknamed the "Limping Dragon" due to his chronic frailty, eventually became bedridden. During this period, he began relying on Cixi to help "reading and writing official communication," a move that shocked traditionalists who believed "women were forbidden from participating in any form of politics." Fearing her ambition, the Emperor’s advisors attempted to block her from power. Upon his death in 1861, he appointed eight regents to oversee his five-year-old son, Tongzhi, and granted the Empress Se-an an edict that authorized her to have Cixi killed if she attempted to seize political control.

The Coup: A Two-Woman Rebellion

Cixi’s path to power was anything but conventional. Recognizing that the regents' isolationist policies were leading China toward defeat, she formed an unlikely alliance with Empress Se-an. In a moment of historical significance, Se-an chose to burn the death warrant intended for Cixi, effectively launching a "two-woman rebellion." They orchestrated a brilliant coup, first by gathering intelligence on court loyalties and then by provoking the regents into a scene so loud it upset the young Emperor Tongzhi. Capitalizing on this "grave offense," Cixi purged the regents, sentencing three to death and exiling others, successfully establishing their rule from "behind the curtain."

A Legacy of Reform and Controversy

For nearly 50 years, Cixi remained the de facto ruler of China. She oversaw radical modernization efforts, including the introduction of "railways, telegraphs, telegrams," and the establishment of diplomatic relations with the West. Despite these advancements, her legacy remains heavily contested. While some view her as a "greedy and despotic" figure, others argue she was a scapegoat for the dynasty’s collapse. As Professor Peng suggests, viewing Cixi is like looking through a "kaleidoscope"; she was a woman who "upended the extremely restricted view of what women were capable of," ultimately burying herself amidst "golden dragons," the traditional symbol of monarchy, signaling her lifelong ambition to be a true sovereign.
