One of the most compelling applications of this research involves Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal prion disease affecting cervids like deer and moose. Because prions cause proteins to misfold, leading to spongiform encephalopathy (a condition characterized by 'huge holes in your brain'), the threat is dire. Golden’s team successfully trained dogs to identify CWD-infected fecal samples with 94% accuracy in the lab and 80% in the field, even amidst the noise and movement of tractors and farm equipment. This research suggests that dogs can serve as a vital safeguard at hunter check-in stations, preventing the consumption of infected meat and helping farmers identify outbreaks within their herds.
